Arguments are a waste of time and energy. There really isn't any convincing anyone with an entrenched belief.

[–]hrm08948 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I find most people argue to validate their own viewpoints. If one has belief in their views, there's no need to engage in futile arguments. You can bring a donkey to water but you can't force it to drink.

[–]BobbingForBunions4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Few people can construct a logical chain of reasoning based on axiomatic truths (for example, "man acts with purpose").

Fewer still are familiar with the Socratic method of argumentation.

They emote.

They opine.

They call you names when your arguments reveal theirs to be based on contradictions or faulty hypotheses.

One of my closest friends is a devout Marxist. He and I disagree about everything. But we always have a blast debating political ethics and social philosophy. He understands and practices argumentation from a critical thinking perspective.

By contrast, I'm happy to ignore the dimwits who do nothing but emote, opine, and lob ad hominems. They're... uninteresting, like most dimwits.

Waste of time an energy. I've learned to become aware of the point where a conversation becomes a debate/argument and simply stop talking.

I do not engage with idiots. Trying to make dumb people smarter will just make you dumber.

[–]MetamorphosisSilver5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Do not engage with idiots or fools. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Wow, that should be an adage

Who didn't? There are people in my life still debating peanut butter vs. Jelly, or which of those to put on top.

Not all arguments are worth fighting, and not all arguments are worth cutting people out of your life for.

I've walked away from almost everyone in my life during lockdowns. It isn't an exaggeration. Many factors contribute to this. I live in California and used to work in entertainment. My entire social life went to hell the day after the 2016 election. I started walking away from people back then in secret. But now that my life has been ripped away from lockdowns, I can no longer have surface level conversations with people and therefore I am slowly being outed. My feelings go against the MSM narrative which is the state religion of California. This means that there is no point in "arguing"/debating if you're in my shoes. I started to go my own way in 2016 without realizing it. It prepared me well for the fallout from these lockdowns.

[–]c_is_for_classified7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I am in the exact same boat as you but replace entertainment with tech. I've gradually unfollowed most friends and even some family on social media since 2016. I completely walked away from the tech industry and retired. And I have gradually walked away from all consumption of mainstream media.

[–]Red-Pill-Hiki0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And I have gradually walked away from all consumption of mainstream media.

And you're not alone on that. No regrets!

Blood pressure lower: check. My brains leaking out the side of my head, due to the sheer idiocy of anything lamestream media has to say? No. And I don't even spell-check TV screen's idiocy, now. A black screen is all I want, 98% of the time. I could call my turned-off TV "Coal Mine At Night" and be quite satisfied to pretend it's performance art.

[–]Red-Pill-Hiki0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've walked away from almost everyone in my life during lockdowns. It isn't an exaggeration.

Years before the lockdowns, I figured out that all of my boundaries sucked, and needed to be massively strengthened, so, I sat down and started writing out a list, on paper, of who to boot out of my life.

Most of these people had never actually been "let in" by me, to begin with, on a case-by-case basis: what I mean is, they were "friends of friends" and thus sort of "baggage I felt I had to put up with, to maintain a friendship with some other person". As I kicked more and more of the hangers on, out, in terms of involvement with my life, and time wasted on those people, boy oh boy, did the list grow! It got to where it needed to be on a PC, to keep track of all the details I was adding: what mental health issues I felt they each had, and so on. I looked for patterns. Found plenty of them. Surprising ones, at the time; but part of my "boundaries" these days.

Suffice to say, I'm a greater-than-ever-before believer in "birds of a feather, flock together".

Using that idea, I could cast suspicious eyes on people who, by themselves, not done anything super-ridiculously wrong. Sure enough, over the next couple of years after that process had begun, they got booted out, too. A "guilty by association" thing. It worked as sort of a Red Flag system, but based on group dynamics, not the actions of one particular individual. If three out of four people who hang out together, had serious issues (as I saw it) then the fourth was suspicious, and bore watching. Sure enough, over time, they'd "show who they were," and when they did: "Bye!" I ended up with less than five people in my life, and most of those were very distant in terms of how much time/effort I put into them. And that's okay. That lets me use this period of isolation, to "individuate" to a much greater degree than when being "social" and having to worry what this or that person "thinks". In the end, I kicked something like thirty people totally out of my life, and I don't miss a single one of them. I have no idea how I didn't notice their BS, when I was exposed to it. The more idiots and losers and liars and jerks I booted out, the more time I had to look at other (additional) potential people's true worth, to me. So it sort of had a snowball effect, over time.

I'll take an appreciation for boundaries, these days, over any of the losers I ended up parting ways with.

I see myself as being "aggressively single" (to use a term LOM came up with, some time back) and am also, the more I look at what's available out there, on the dating meat-market, as being "aggressively celibate," as well.

I figure I'm "married to solitude," and it's heaven.

"Better alone," as a friend of mine used to tell me, "than in bad company".

That works well for me, but not everyone can stand actually having long stretches of true solitude. For those who love it: "accept no substitutes"!

Basically /every/ argument with a woman I abandon quickly.

Sorry for the lengthy explanation, I feel this is not known enough. You can not discuss everything with everyone, here's why:

I learned there is a prerequisite to dealing with irrational people (e.g. religious fanatics):

The Person has to have a condition under which he/she is wiling to concede they are wrong and your argument is valid.

For example if some muslim fanatic firmly beliefs god told him to do this or that - if you ask him under which condition he is willing to change his belief and he can not name you any condition, then there is zero reason to try to reason with them. Walk away.

Same applies for people who believe in homeopathy, e.g. if they say like 'When my kid took these pills from that homeopathic doctor, it got healthy within 1 week. I know they work.' - then don't be a fool to argue with them, telling them scientific studies that these pills were proven to not have any effect besides placebo-effect. Walk away.

Then there are (e.g. conspiracy theory) guys who are (1) not willing to give up their conspiracy theories and (2) come up with any number of illogical explanations in a blink of an eye defending their position. You usually end up trying to disprove each of these explanations one by one, taking lots of time to explain the science behind it - meanwhile that conspiracy guy tells another 3 bullshit reasons for his conspiracy theories (often in the form of open ended questions instead of clearly stating his opinion). You can't win. Walk away.

And then there are feminists. Walk away.

And by extension AWALT - every woman: They firmly belief that all women must get more rights and privileges.

There is no arguing with them, women belief if they tell you even one single time that a woman is wrong/not perfect then they would automatically loose all of their assets and ressources. So they will fight to the bone to proof to you whatever shit is currently discussed, for example that every man MUST under all circumstances hold the door open to a woman.

Plus women will resort to aforementioned bullshit-tactic: Come up with dozens of unreasonable arguments to defend their point - while you disprove one reason, they will have come up with 5 more irrational arguments. Walk away.

Don't argue with women about feminism, women's rights or men's rights. It's like playing chess with a duck. Walk away.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig. (english proverb)

The Person has to have a condition under which he/she is wiling to concede they are wrong and your argument is valid.

This is a damn good way to put it.

[–]Red-Pill-Hiki0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't argue with women about feminism, women's rights or men's rights. It's like playing chess with a duck. Walk away.

Actually, funnily enough, I read one of a female's books about narcissists, and narcissistic abuse, and she used almost the exact same language. What she compared it (arguing with a narc) to was trying to play chess with a pigeon. No matter what, you can't win. The pigeon, she said, would end up by knocking all the pieces off of the board; shitting on the board while it was at it; and declaring it a win.

So even some women understand these concepts, and will (at times) admit any such effort is futile.

But good luck getting women to admit they are or might be a narcissist. Even if they can recite all of the major signs of narcissism, some of them, when cornered, simply freak the hell out, if you dare to point out, "Dearest, honey, sweetheart, you're teaching about all these traits, and guess what? You appear to have them? Doesn't that make you what you are preaching about? Seems like it might". (I have "Queen Beeing" in mind, over on YouTube, but plenty of other "life coach" types probably have a lot of "Physician, heal thyself" going on, that they are dissociating from, and refusing to see / admit?

Pretty such everyone here have dealt with solipsistic people in their lives before.

This phenomenon is just caused by low self esteem. In their heart of hearts, they know they are wrong.

It's called the "Ah Q mentality" among mainland Chinese and people of Chinese ethnicity. The "Ah Q mentality" (阿Q精神, "Ā Q jīngshén") is used commonly as a term of mockery to describe someone who chooses not to face up to reality and deceives himself into believing he is successful, or has unjustified beliefs of superiority over others. It describes a narcissistic individual who rationalizes every single actual failure he faces as a psychological triumph ("spiritual victory").

Source: The True Story of Ah Q - Wikipedia

Also, you don't have to prove any point to the person you know, winning arguments with fools and solipsistic cunts is impossible. Don't waste your time and energy on them.

Also, those people may even skew or manipulate data in such a way to appeal to their retarded agendas. You wouldn't want to play mental gymnastics with such people. It's ineffably tiring and pointless.

[–]SwordMasterLink791 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

wonderful picture there on 9GAG 🤣 - saved it

Also there are those people who know/suspect they are wrong, but can never agree to your argument or otherwise they would not have a roof over their head and something to eat. E.g. some useless office worker/workeress who has a task which is completely useless to everyone and anyone and does not contribute to society.

Yet you will never get them to agree their task is useless - otherwise they wouldn't have anything to eat the next day....

I'm willing to debate, especially if something may adversely affect my life.

But if it's a matter of taste or just irrelevant, no thanks.

[–]blackstreetxy[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What kind of things are you willing to debate for?

[–]GroundbreakingAd75850 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I guess if there was some law, for example, that would be implemented that would hurt people, cripple the economy, etc.

If you are spending hours to prove your point then you didnt already have your point defended to begin with...When i argue I usually know exactly what and where to find what i am defending. Secondly...why is it always up to us to defend ourselves and find facts, yet most morons don't care to do any research of their own to back up their bullshit...

[–]Throwthe88270 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most of the times I had to defend points, the other person just ignored everything I answered and informed them.

I actually had to tell the person she had not watched to video I sent her (ten minutes explaining science about the creation of the universe and how we need a first mover, God).

She was just looking for excuses to complain about anything I said and claim I did not have answers. I loved talking about the subject and I tried to answer in clear ways, but it got to the point that you could understand that she was just giving excuses.

Another time, I presented a magazine about Evolution and new discoveries in Evolution. This guy decided to oppose the magazine and said he had read it and it did not say that. I was not willing to believe he had read anything since he opposed the content of the magazine and he wanted me to erase my text talking about the magazine and about another source on Evolution and new discoveries.

I had to make new texts and offer other sources for these people to stop insulting me and actually listening to the Science they wanted so much to push down everyone’s throat.

Newsflash: Science disagreed with their point.

I hope those texts were useful for people genuinely interested in Science and seeking knowledge to understand the world.

[–]Rooftopred0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do that for almost all long arguments unless they directly affect me- like something at work. It’s just not worth the effort and often people aren’t willing to change their views no matter what. I find it’s just best to move on and get back to whatever it was I wanted to do. They might “win” the argument but they’ll be wrong their entire life.

[–]Global_MGTOW0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are still morons on Reddit that 100% truly believe that Trump hired some hookers to pee on the pillow in a hotel room Obama stayed in years ago. There's nothing you can say or do to convince them otherwise. Scariest thing, every single one of these morons thinks they're some kind of genius and everyone else is a moron.

It's a waste of time to argue with morons who won't listen to reason. What it boils down to is their "feelings", no amount of facts or evidence will convince them otherwise.

[–]roflcopt0rz_returns0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is why I try not to even argue with anyone. I either stay silent or agree with them.
