I'll start this off with a quick story. I work with a lot of women. Last week we were sitting in a room together and one girl was asked if she had a boyfriend to which she replied No. Another girl muttered under her breath "all men are scum" even though she is engaged. She said it jokingly, but it still rattled my cage a bit.

So we had a department event where about 10 of us were invited. I didn't want to go, mainly because of comments like these I have heard from the girls in the past. I used to actually like most of them and they seemed fun to hang out with, but some of them come off as misandrist at times, and sometimes I get the feeling that they think I'm "less than."

I didn't respond to the invite, and today I received some forms of playful shaming from a few people, pretty much trying to get me to go and trying to make me feel like a dick for not responding. So I simply ignored them, finished my work and headed home since this all happened towards the end of the day.

My whole life I have done things that I haven't necessarily wanted to do, but I figured doing them would please other people. I have decided that's no longer what is best for me. I need to do what makes me happy. I'd much rather chill out at home and have a couple beers while making some dinner and watching a game or a movie than listening to constant banter for 2-4 hours that I have no interest in, and possibly having to hear complaints about boyfriends or misandrist comments.

I just wanted to get your guys' take on this. I don't really care if the girls think I'm an asshole for not coming, but I guess it could make the office a bit rough. I think maybe I could have handled this situation better.
