No, the power law isn't some bullshit branded commandment from a self proclaimed pick up artist or guru. It's a term straight from statistical analysis.
Wikipedia:
In statistics, a power law is a functional relationship between two quantities, where a relative change in one quantity results in a proportional [power] relative change in the other quantity, independent of the initial size of those quantities: one quantity varies as a power of another.
What does this mean ?
Basically that the top 20% of competitors drastically outperform the bottom 80%.
The Power Law is theorized to be true in a variety of fields and performance measurements, but is probably most accepted when comparing the profitability of venture capital portfolios. Here, The Power Law explains why 20% of Sequoia Capital's 2016 portfolio companies produced exponentially more revenue than the other 80% combined.
So what does this have to do with dating and hooking up?
See, for the longest time, I always thought that, as a male who was more attractive than about 60 percent of the other competing dudes, that I would be able to get about 60% of the number of attractive girls that a a guy in the top 10% would be able to get.
If that incredible hulk looking friend of mine with the great social skills averaged about 10 sexual flings a year... then my skinny fat self with a decent face should be able to pull in 6. Or maybe if I was unlucky or overestimated myself a bit I would still be able to date 3 or 4 new attractive girls every year.
So whenever I would exhaust myself swiping on Tinder, or spend all weekend at a bar, I would be pounding my head in confusion and rage when there was literally nobody interested in me. Seriously, at one point I even upgraded to unlimited swipes, swiped through an entire city, and still had no attractive girls matched.
You see, I was convinced that the dating and hookup culture followed a normalized law. That we lived in a world where the number of attractive women who were willing to sleep with you steadily increased or decreased based on how attractive you were in comparison to your competitors.
And even after my first hand goose eggs on Tinder and the bar scene, I still didn't get it. Or maybe I didn't want to. Instead, I rationalized that the dating landscape was still normalized, but that I had severely overestimated my attractiveness, and I was actually only more attractive than about 10-20% of the population instead of 60%.
Ouch.
Eventually though, my rational self prevailed - realizing that there was no way I was actually in the very bottom percentiles - mostly by the rationale that I wasn't obese, unemployed, handicapped, an 'undesirable' ethnicity, etc.
But I was still without answers and just as sexually frustrated as ever.
It wasn't until I picked up a book on Venture Capital analysis and learned about Power Laws that it really hit me.
The Dating Scene follows a Power Law, not a Normal Law.
- This is why your most attractive bro has been in four flings since your last one ended.
- This is why any guy under a 7/10 (top 30%) is warned to not even bother with Tinder.
- This is why if you are at a Hollywood club, a celebrity will be able to bring back 10 girls to his house, where you can't even get 1.
- This is why we see awesome sex life results when we start dressing slightly better than other men or get in even marginally better shape.
- This why we are initially confused or enchanted by the mythical 'chad' - because until we understand power laws it makes absolutely no sense on how a guy not that different than us can be 20-50x more successful with women.
In fact, the expectation of a Normal Law and lack of awareness of a Power Law in the dating scene is what frustrates and depresses so many men. And is probably what turns some of them to the RedPill - which is founded on making yourself the top 10-20%.
