My parents and I just bought a two residence property recently. Their home has a wood furnace in the basement. Upon first glance I could tell the thing was a death trap: 50 years old, clearly not maintained, heat vents chewed through by rats. I told her at least 100 times she ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT use it until a professional evaluates, repairs and instructs her how to use it. I went to her house today to find smoke billowing from the floor vents and my mother casually making coffee as if nothing were amiss. I said "Don't you see your house is full of smoke!?!?!" and she just gave a blank stare and said "Oh that's just the furnace. I wanted to feel cozy". I told her at once to get out of the house with the pets and ran down to the basement to douse the fire. The basement was full of smoke so thick you couldnt even see. I went out, got some fresh air and covered my face with a towel to go in and open the doors and windows and turn on fans. I go outside and try tell my mother that I told her 100 times not to use it. She simply couldn't grasp the gravity of the situation and was offended that I raised my voice. Then she tries to go sit in the house full of carbon monoxide as I try and tell her that she has to stay outside until the house airs out. This woman would seriously rather die than admit she did something stupid. I am at a loss for words.
