I noticed that a while back while playing with google trends, keywords like feminism, global warming, etc, etc, etc all do that.
Interestingly the pattern is almost perfectly phase shifted by 6 mo if you filter by country to Australia. So my guess is its related to the time of year.
Basically, your average thot doesnt care much about reading some muffington post rage bait article in June when shes at the local festival getting drunk & making out with Chad. But as the weather gets colder in the fall she looks for something to get riled up about, so the muffington gets more clickthroughs/searches on their latest retarded article, resulting in the first peak. The dip in between is the calming/distracting effect of the Christmas/Holiday season, after which the traffic revs up again in Februaryish, then dies off as the weather gets warmer.
Edit: u/wellimout may have a point about students doing homework, but I suspect the longer term cycle with a low point in 2009ish and peaks around 2003 & 2016 may indicate something else is going on
