How'd you get your computer to survive the first hosing down?

This so much to every person who makes episode names in torrents look.stupid.like.this.s05e11, itvreally fucks with organization and is such a pain in the ass to fix, every file must have the periods removdd and spaces added manually.
[–]greenleefs2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Spaces fuck things up. I allow no spaces anywhere. It's underscores OrFilesLikeThis.

Or we could just use proper basic english grammar like everyone learned in school, you know that common language to make communication between people uniform and understandeable, instead of every "scene" coming up with their own systems.

Fair point as well, renaming and properly organizing all the media I get for free isn't the biggest burden in the world.
It's still frustrating as all fuck.
What's even worse is when metadata filenames get somehow hardcoded and uneditable and every time I open certain shows in VLC I have to manually reorder the episodes. Every. Single. Time.
Edit: this didn't used to be a problem, but ever since Terabytes became a thing, and I now own 3x1Tb hard drives that I have almost filled with economically sized videos and television (by that I mean movies are 700-900Mb, I refuse movies that are 1.5Gb or higher unless they have a 4+ hour runlength, tv is 350Mb. an episode tops, 700Mb for hour longs.) and at that size of a collection organizational problems become a real thing.
[–]EvilPencil0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
3x1Tb is novice mode...

[–]rebellionmarch0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When you think of it in terms of what most people find acceptable, or even desireable in file size (such an obsession with HD, which is ludicrous given that a mere decade ago 720p was considered glorious) movies that are 2-8Gb most people like, a season of TV that's 22Gb? Normal.
On one of my 3 hard drives I have 102 complete television shows, comprising only about 860Gb. The other filled with movies is currently just under 700Gb and contains 634 movies.
The third hard drive contains books and such and is not worth mention as pdfs are always tiny.
Most people would see those same numbers from ~40 shows and ~70-200 movies.
I am no novice, I am The Master

I always thought having colons and letters in the date/time combo was annoying, so I just jammed everything and used positional offsets to retrieve information. Mostly to dump log files and crap.

ISO8601 is the perfect date. You don’t even need date-aware algorithms to sort it, it sorts naturally by virtue of the order of its parts.

ISO8601
I'm not paying the Swiss to define my dates.
[–]Hellse0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It also makes sense in numbering systems because we write the number with the highest magnitude or value on the left-hand side. The year is the largest increment of time we normally write, followed logically by the finer and more precise measurements of month then day.

I like the Army format.
04 OCT 2018
[–]arcb7c69e24 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
'2018 OCT 04' is also good, I just wish the months didn't alpha-sort so badly (apr, aug, dec, feb, jan, jul, jun, mar, may, nov, oct, sep)
[–]fmanly1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
While I prefer ISO 8601 (2018-10-04) the format above is at least completely non-ambiguous. It is even less ambiguous than the ISO format, but it can't be sorted as easily and mixes letters/numbers.
My employer uses this date format, with the date always written with a leading zero if <10, which makes the date non-ambiguous and also impossible to alter without it being obvious.

YYYYMMDD for file sorting, DDMMMYYYY (e.g. 04OCT2018) for all other uses.

[–]Konsaki0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I actually use YYYYMMDD to start file names files that are created daily. Makes it really easy to find the exact date in a 'sort by name'.
e.g. 20181002_Filename.doc
[–]MenGoingTOWin0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
2018-Oct-04 is the correct ISO date format.
[–]ploobadoof0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]badaboomxx0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]iamlokijr0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Did anybody else think of dates? I mean they are really tasty and nutritious.
I’m triggered by the OP.
The ACTUAL best format is Day (one or two digits) Month (Three letters) Year (two or four digits). For example, 4 Oct, 2018, or 30 May, ‘67. June and July are not a problem in this system
If the day was important (Election Day, Independence Day), that goes before the date.
[–]prove_this0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yyyy/MM/dd is less open to misinterpretion

What use do we have for dates? Success is waking up and not knowing what day it is and not finding out until an hour before the deadline for that project you were supposed to start two days ago.
