Way to analyze the cases with tunnel vision. Look up the actual crimes and their respective sentences. Robbery is a 2nd degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years. If he had a weapon, its 1st degree and 5 to life. If he had a record, there are minimum sentences.

I have checked the story, and it seems to be confirmed. From Snopes (not the most reliable site, but this time they seem to be unambiguous):

We were able to confirm Brown pleaded guilty to first degree robbery on 14 January 2009 and was sentenced to 15 years hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, according to the Caddo Parish court clerk’s office. Brown is currently housed at Madison Parish Detention Center until the end of his sentence in 2022. According to a spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Brown has the possibility for work release in 2018, meaning if granted he can leave detention to work during daytime hours.

I would need more facts before I make a final decision about the situation, however I am inclined towards the rich man's punishment being way to soft. If the homeless man used force or the threat of force to take the money, 15 years is about right. If it was non violent theft, I would give him some community service, and see if the court could not find a shelter for him.
