I was privileged to cook and do light housework for my aging father after my mother died. I spent 7 wonderful years trying to begin to pay back the debt I owed the man.

Goddamn it I'm tearing up. My mum died when I was 5, and my dad raised me by himself. He didn't spend as much time with me or bond with me as much as he could, but he still sacrificed a hell lot of his own life for me. I will grow up to be the best that I can, if not for myself then for him, for all he's done for me. Thanks for sharing this.

I genuinely wish I could relate to this. But I cant my father was a absolutely terrible person. His children were his lowest priority. I can't tell you how many life events he missed to go ride his motorcycle. He has 3 kids and a grandchild whom none have any contact or association with him. He left us homeless on the street at one point and said to us "well that's life" when we were confused about what we did to deserve such a situation. And then finally after years of no contact nor attempt at reconciliation with his kids he decides to cut his life insurance and disinherit us because we won't actively be in his life while he treats us life shit. So I really can't relate to this one and it sucks. It sucks not having what seems like such a strong bond in my life. Sorry for the rambling any time this type posts get brought up a get a bit worked up.

I feel this so much. father died when I was in 3rd grade. Prob would of been similar to Anon's father. Hope I will be too similar to anons father too. Hoping I don't die of a terminal illness, but, if I can have a kid & raise a kid first, it'd all be worth it to me.

I know a few single mothers and some of them really have sad stories (like drug addiction or an abusive relative) but when I heard their stories I wasn't even nearly as near to tears than when I read this

For all you men out there, if you can, give the old man a call. He will appreciate it more than you can imagine. I lost my dad when I was 26. I miss him a lot. He was hard on me, but the good things and what he taught me are what I remember.
