I worked in IT for 18 years, lost my job and moved cities with my fiance and started over. Now I make car parts in a factory. The men I work with now ask how I am, buy each other food when they re hungry and generally care about one another. I make less now but receive so much more thought daily from my co-workers. This is right on the money.

That is why a few of my friends created a "tribe" of men as we call it. We meet every 2 weeks or so, hold each other accountable for our goals, go motorcycling, have a poker night, smoke cigars/drink bourbon, take guy trips to Vegas or other places. Some of us meet up in the gym 5-6 days a week to run and/or weight lift.

Men need support too and to keep you honest with your goals in life (or with whatever problems that person is dealing with).

It has to be a close knit group though. We talk about very personal stuff like family, careers, life, depression, over-drinking, etc. We have rules about who we let in the group to keep the trust.

To break it down it goes like:

Must be sponsored by a member
The newbie hangs out with various members of the group when we do non-related tribe things.
Everyone votes to let someone in, it has to be unanimous.
A type of "NDA" is signed by the newb drawn up by a lawyer in our group.

It sounds dumb at first but it helps keep you (and everyone in the group) strong.

Or make it practically impossible for you to win any significant battle, in your relationship, because every time you have a conflict, she has an army of friends taking her side, many of which are guy friends who wish to one day replace you, while you seemingly have none in your corner to lean on.

After reading, "Self-Made Man" by Norah Vincent (it is basically a confirmation bias book for male issues, but good leverage for arguing against identity politics since it's a woman making the arguments), I was blown away by her realization that while there's an argument for the "patriarchy" being oppressive towards men, there's also simultaneous redemption of male issues through the "patriarchy." This will be preaching to the choir here, but it sure was a relief to hear a feminist say the resolution to the problems plaguing society are not the feminization of men, but rather there needs to be masculine influences for boys and men; men are their own worst enemies but also their own saviors. I fully support looking out for one another and believe the power of men looking out for and helping men. But growing up, my parents worked together and relied on one another to get the job of raising us done. Now, years and years later, married, and a son of my own, I identify with just about everything in this except the bit about men only being able to rely on other men. If your wife or girlfriend isn't able to be there for you when you need it, then you need to either get some therapeutic help as a couple or you need to leave and find someone who will. My wife relies on me and I rely on my wife. It's a partnership and should be equal in responsibility. I have male friends that I can vent to and come to for advice, but my wife is my rock just as I am hers.
