Ok, here is what I think happened. You went to bbq. Intros were made. You went to socialize with seperate groups. Some one in her group said something to the effect 'he works in food service? Girl, you can do better than that!". The worm has been planted in her ear and thatvis all she will hear from now on (kinda like the ear worm parasite from Star Trek: Wrath of Khan), and you will never again be enough for her. All your hard work and sacrifice has been nullified by one simple comment from another woman. That is it. She cares more about what she looks like in front of another woman, than she cares about you. The investments you have made in to your future, your plans, your goals, they mean nothing to her any more.

You mentioned that she had her schooling paid for by her family, and that you had to work your way through school. She doesn't know what it is like to be hungry, at least not like you do. This isn't just a man/woman difference, this is a difference in reference due to different economic strata. Example: for her IHOP is bumming it. For you IHOP is fine dining.

I know that I am making assumptions about all kinds of things, but these were my impressions if your post. In conclusion, unless you can get her to understand your reference points (past), and see how far you have come, she will have no appreciation for where you are headed.

The thing is, when you work hard for what you achieve, you learn to handle failure. So, this guy, will get a good job, eventually. This girl might be doing fine now, but when she gets faced with the possibility of losing everything, will likely crack. All of a sudden this guy's job won't be as much of a problem.
