There are a few ways of looking at this. On the one hand, it is their nature. The heart wants what the heart wants, and there really is no reasoning with it. However, women are still human, which means they supposedly have the power of reason and should be able to exercise self-restraint when confronted with appealing but poor choices. The problem is, in the current climate, they are not only encouraged to make these poor choices with the prevailing "slut culture", but actively assisted in the event of poor outcomes such as single mothers being subsidized by the state and whatever hookup drew the short straw. So, what started out as a safety net to prevent catastrophic injury due to an unexpected fall has turned into a hammock.

And this is a demonstrable feedback loop: delayed or interrupted work history, leading to less experience as a function of age and/or more part-time work, giving rise to the mythical "wage gap".
