By the time a woman finishes her medical training, she's almost too old to have kids. Women finish medical school at about age 27-28. They finish residency at about 31-33. If they do a fellowship they won't be done until 35+.

Women going into medicine gravitate towards three fields: psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstetrics. Pediatrics doesn't make enough money to justify the absurb expense of medical school today. Psychiatry is being taken away by nurse practitioners, no reason an NP can't do everything an MD can do in that field. So that leaves obstetrics which has one of the worst work/life balances of any career because you have to take call and work nights, holidays, and weekends.

Unfortunately many women don't think any of this through before applying. One day they wake up to find that they've turned 30 or 35 years old, they're still not married, their chances of having a family are plummeting, and they have $200,000 in student loans.
