Eaaaa.. It's a male bonding strategy.. Something to talk about with other guys. I know some teams but not names of players unless they are known. I'm only interested in the game if I've made a bet or learning a new betting strategy.

I have some dudes I know that confess that the only time they get to talk about their girlfriends or wives is with me and not with other dudes. Witch is cool and I don't mind.

pretty big NFL fan here. some of you have this air of superiority about not liking sports. I didn't get into sports until I was 17 but it's part of the culture in America. key talking point of men and I wanted to be included in the convo. ended up loving the game but all I follow is the NFL. it's not all brainless idiots who like sports. I was a gamer/musician only for my first 17 yrs

It's not a big mystery. American culture has sports sewn into it at a low level. Most people are not philosophers, they go with what they grew up with.

If American culture was engrained with liking a hobby such as drying and painting cat shit--dry cat shit painters would be paid millions. There is literally no impact on your personal life if LeBron scores. You are not on the team. You're not getting paid. Being a fan does not make you special--but this is how sports makes many men feel.

I find sports boring. I have found arty guys act the same way about bands and playing guitar.

There is no ultimate "my tastes are awesome and yours are pointless."

I think I have the taste for competition but it has to be REAL so I read about wars and battles. This highlights bravery, talent, high stakes, winning, but it seems more REAL.

I have no interest in changing people. If you like sports, good for you. I like reading about psychology.

An end note is that I believe genes impact what you like. I've noticed a correlation between being good at math and liking sports if you were good at them, or liking virtual games if you are good at math but bad at sports like the fat girl who turns emo/indie because that hot girls reject her from their clique.

We're all animals.

Also, I'm trying hard not to judge people. I can be a pretentious prick.

Well there's this part in The Counselor where Fassbender is shopping for diamonds for his girl (in fact this whole movie is relevant as fuck to mgtow in general) and this amsterdam jewish diamond dealer is yakking about how (i'm paraphrasing)

You can identify a culture by the man society worships, with the greeks it was the hero (achilles, hector), with the jews it is the penitent/prophet (daniel, isaiah, jesus for christians, muhammad for muslims), and there will not be another culture after

But I disagree. Our culture in America is Roman, and it is focused on "The Gladiator". The slave who is found to be exceptional and is rewarded with exceptional privileges for his talent, for entertaining the masses and keeping them from eating the rich.

Why is this? Probably just a bi-product of economic convenience that feeds in on itself to grow exponentially year after year, like everything else in western society. This also applies to the entertainment industry, in particular music industry pop stars. There are exceptions, but for the vast majority of players, be they wannabe pro ballplayers or wannabe singers/performers, these industries and communities are exceptionally cruel and competitive and the expectation is that you sacrifice your time and dignity in an attempt to gain the rewards of money and recognition.

I can see finding enjoyment in watching people at the top of their field compete against each other. But that is not how many sports fans are. They become obsessed with the team nearest to them as if that means anything. It is not like the players are usually from the local area or even country.

I suppose it is just a proxy for the war-like behavior that has been endemic throughout human history.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I was raised with it. I've been following baseball since I was three for example. It's a part of my life. I can't imagine not being a sports fan. No, it isn't the most intellectual or self-improving hobby, but fuck it, I enjoy it. So yeah, I spend probably too much time on it, it's my life. I'll spend it doing things I enjoy. Isn't that the point of MGTOW?

For a sub that preaches all about having hobbies away from women you'd think this place would be a little more into sports. I enjoyed playing sports in my youth and I enjoy watching sports as an adult. Women don't care about sports and it seems to be mostly a men's only club in terms of watching and playing them. I don't get all this sports hate.

It is entertainment. Part of the entertainment is the social interaction before the actual games. Entertainment is something that is unproductive in almost all situations.

Though it is excellent as a tool for building culture. Rome understood this. And yes, religion is also such a tool. Culture is extremely important for a society to thrive.

You're right man. It's ok to be a fan, but taking it overboard is sort of pathetic. My NCAA coach used to always tell me that we were the ones out there doing it, not just watching it, and that is what really counts, no matter what level you're actually "doing it" at.

Remember when you were a kid, would you rather go out and play sandlot baseball or sit at home in front of the tv and watch it? Would you rather learn to surf or watch it on tv?...

Im not a huge supporter of sports. I follow the packers and an italian football team. Nothing in the world has inherent meaning or purpose. It is all absurd. As long as you understand this, you are free to face and engage the absurd however you like, with the understanding that it is ephemeral. Go out there and engage things that light up your pleasure centers. Go be a foorball or hockey fanatical madman! It doesnt mean any less than anything else. The only rule is to not physically harm others(their property, etc). Life is short, engage the absurd...or not...it really doesnt matter one way or another!
