Me (F30) has not long had a baby with ex-ish bf(34) I adore him, he adores me but resentment has crept in due to his ongoing indifference or ability to care for himself. He doesn't have many life skills as he was babied and has no strong role models so I completely understand how not being able to look after himself manifested. Over the past 2 years he has slowly descended into depression as a consequence of this realisation and how it's affected his whole life. There are definitely other contributions to the depression but I won't go into that just now.

He is a huge part of my life, not because we share a tiny boy but he loves me like no one ever had before and it allowed me to really grow and fix myself. He was there, helping me build my business and he was there when I was extremely ill. Something I never forget to be grateful for.

But... due to his penchant for squalor and his lack of impetus to change that, we've been butting heads for a while. I'm still breastfeeding our 8 month old so I'm rebelling extra hard against having a man child to deal with but I'm still pleasant and affectionate. He still lives here (doesn't contribute financially - I've stopped asking) but sleeps in the spare room. I love him so much, we have an amazing rapport and have made a rare connection that I still want to maintain but I firmly believe we will all be happier when he gets the fuck out my house. And I mean that sincerely. I have done everything I can at every given opportunity to lift this man up but I think I'm actually hurting him. He flat out refuses to look after himself, has ballooned in weight and has a complete disregard for keeping our living space functional. There's only so much I can do for him before I'm just enabling it.

So... We've been talking a lot recently and he finally started opening up, for him to then tell me that I emasculate him and that it's one of the biggest reasons he's so unhappy. I want to take it seriously but now I'm really hurt. Especially since he cannot give me an example of what I do to 'make' him feel that way. From our discussions I've figured out that him having power or feeling like a man means I have to just be less than what I am. Bearing in mind that I'm the submissive one! I'm un-fucking-believably sick of it. Not being true to myself is out of the question, I have worked too hard. I want to be there for him in this real low but when me having high self esteem and being driven fucks with him so much?

I'm curious as to what the general consensus is on emasculation. How is it fair that I can be held accountable for how this man feels about his masculinity? I think my thoughts on it are that a mans masculinity is ultimately his own responsibility.
