I’m listening to the original podcast Dirty John now, and can’t wait to watch the shows after I finish. A lot of times I find myself saying aloud “how could you believe that?!” in regards to the lies John would tell Debra, but then I remind myself that when you’re gaslighted and abused, you start to believe many things you wouldn’t otherwise believe.

I was waiting for someone to mention this show on this sub. It’s so illustrative of the importance of vetting and leaving after the first red flag. And NEVER BUILD A MAN. Seriously everyday I’m more and more convinced of being single forever.

I’m a few episodes into DIRTY JOHN: BETTY, after having watched all of Season 1 of DIRTY JOHN (Connie Britton as Debra). Amanda Peet is so good in this role.

In the US, S2 hasn’t dropped on Netflix yet, but likely will by Spring, but it was recently broadcast on the USA network and currently you can watch the first 3 episodes for free via the free NBC app, as long as you can log in with pretty much any nationwide cable provider.

Dan’s red flags were hard to spot early on, in the context of courtship in 1963, but basically he is likely a sociopath or a covert narcissist. He lovebombed like a pro, rushed her into marriage, and pregnancy-trapped Betty. Another red flag was not dressing appropriately at the wedding (illustrating his contempt) and suddenly changing career fields and going back to school for law, and expecting her and the babies to move out of state without getting Betty’s input first. Then he starts hanging with cheaters at work, and approves of a colleague leaving his wife for a younger woman, and it’s all downhill from there. Dan was an extremely subtle gaslighting abuser, primarily financially and psychologically. Definitely worth watching.

Just started watching this show, literally, just finished episode 5 a few minutes ago! It’s a great show, although the two daughters are extremely irritating and caricature-like with their whiny voices... It’s both, frustrating and relatable watching the main character sink into her love addiction, while enabling the man’s drug addiction and other despicable sociopathic traits.

I'm three episodes in and already disgusted. The manipulation and intentional tactics to make her seem crazy are just... no words, really. And how he used her to get to be successful and wealthy. Just gross. Then has the gall to state that he pays for everything so she owes him?!

This reminded me of Jeff Bezos with his wife and how so many men (and some women) argued that she was owed nothing because he built it all himself. Well how does he have time for all that if he doesn't have a partner who does literally everything else in his life for him? And some of the business too? But housework and child raising doesn't build a trillion dollar empire so she's owed nothing apparently.
