So I was bitching to a friend last night (owner of two pits) about how I feel like the 3rd wheel in the relationship my BF has with his dog (lab) and how he prioritizes it and makes every effort to connect and bond with it, and with me it's the opposite. I acknowledge he's been betrayed by humans, most notably his own mother, and I realize I'm paying for that because he doesn't know how else to process.

So she's giving me the usual "his dog is loyal and will never leave him" and I responded with the usual "because it's completely dependent on him" and explained how I don't depend on him for anything, I'm with him because I choose to be with him. She said yes, because I don't depend on him I could leave him any time you want to. So in their minds, a dog staying because they have NO choice is more valued than a human that accepts them for who they are and this is where the conversation ended only because my brain couldn't compute. It's like they won't put the effort into a mature, healthy human relationship because they could be betrayed BUT that mindset is exactly why someone wouldn't want to stick around, because they're not invested or putting in the work.

Is there anyone out there that can help me make sense of this? I know there are some current and former dog owners on here. Help a sister out!
