This goes for anyone, not just men/potential romantic partners. Your mental health and self-esteem is a precious thing; don’t let anyone trample on it. Staying in the HV mindset means protecting yourself EVERYWHERE, even when it’s hard or socially stigmatized (“but they’re family!” etc.)

When I was a pickme, my ex would dump me and/or tell me I was stupid for wanting to marry him almost every single time I would cry or get upset. I dumped him over a year ago, and it's still a struggle to believe I deserve to have emotions. I keep expecting my current boyfriend to suddenly not love me with no reason or warning, and I know it's related to this trauma.

If your partner is angry at you and all they can do is pout and insult you then you have to get away from them. It’s a manipulation tactic. That dangerous emotional immaturity can turn to emotional abuse very quickly. In a healthy relationship if there is an issue, which of course there will be sometimes, both parties need to speak calmly and figure out a solution together. Don’t negotiate with emotional terrorists. Let them sulk.

This is exactly why my ex and I broke up. A much needed lesson learned the hard way, but never again.
