Does anyone else find this lifestyle a bit lonely?

I’m 41 now and have been on my own for 2 years and there just doesn’t seem to be a lot for a man to do that doesn’t revolve around a family or working to support a family. I had a great life for the first 39 years but I do now feel I am just becoming some quiet old strange guy who lives alone. My days now are just work and sleep and it all feels, well, a bit pointless.

I have a son, he is 9 now, and he has never known his parents to be together. He lives with me every other week. I worry now that after losing my family that I can’t give him a full upbringing. His mother still has her family and a partner so he gets exposed to much more typical socialisation there but, with me I just have no connections with anyone. I strongly believe that a man should work hard to support his family and those close to him but if he never sees me do those things then what sort of example am I setting for him. I don’t really want him emulating a solitary fringe dwelling man with little discernable purpose.

I’m not even sure how to form this into useful questions. I just have an empty feeling. Not failure, or sadness, as such but just a lack of purpose, of utility. Strip away all of the traditional social family structures from a man and what use am I?
