They seem to take a wicked pleasure in destroying something good. It's the essence of "perversity". No better depiction (of that or anything in literature, imo) than in Poe's "The Black Cat". That guy (a hopeless, self-loathing alcoholic) emphasized the point that he hurt the animal just because he inherently knew that it was good, and that in so-doing, he committed a deadly sin.

love the POE reference. thank you. I'll check this out. May i also add check out Luis Bunuel movies, he really cracks the struggle men have with women and how absurd they are and ridiculous we are for following them. Films like Belle Du Jour and Object of Desire for example. He's a surrealist filmmaker which makes you think, but his themes are clear, men are locked in a sisyphean struggle with the temptation of women.

Thanks. Bunuel looks right up my ally. Unfortunate he's not on my radar screen. Belle de Jour made it onto my favorite films list years ago, but I have no recollection. Need to revisit.
Yeah, always trying to explain things (to myself), think that Black Cat reference is one of the better ones I've realized in a while. The keys are self-loathing and intoxication. (These days women are drunk on power.) And men don't normally love them. Men are just affectionate. (A cat rubs itself on your leg (prominent in the story), because that feels good to the cat, not because it thinks you are so great.) Though men (and cats) actually can love.
And Poe is one of the true greats. Black Cat is right at the top. The Mask of the Red Death. (It didn't engage me as much through, but the the climax is wonderful.) Some obscure ones like King Pest (humor and feeling as opposed to meaning) and Hop-Frog (great revenge piece). And Cask of Amontillado (revenge again).
