I am a lawyer. When I find a fellow lawyer who is not a snake they usually become a friend for life. I can think of half a dozen that have really helped me or that I still spend my free time with years after we stopped working together.

I'm the same way. I try to get along with everyone, but I keep my distance and don't reveal too much personal stuff. I've rarely made friends at work, but I do get along with everyone. I find that true friend are few and far between and just about all friendships are transitional, meaning they will come and go because we all grow and change as we get older and sometimes, we go in different directions.

Looking forward to testing this. I plan on going back to study in college in a few years and I got at least to great friendships in at my current workplace. I've been able to keep other friendships long term. My longest friendship is all the way back, we met when I was 6yo~ then I got 2 friends from high school era, which is soon to be a decade ago~

I would go further and say that any friendship you get if you are above 40 are either quite superficial and just for the other party self-interest. I'm on the same page about "not being a dick". More than that, I get pleasure from being kind. Alas, as it is said in my country "you offer a hand, they drag your whole arm", so nowadays I'm usually bending more to the silent dick side.

Now, on a side whining: oh how I wish to completely remove myself from corporate IT.

I would so have needed this "speech" a decade ago. I was an over-achiever working for a consult agency. Somehow I fooled myself to believe that the fact that they praised my work meant they would care to keep me around, I made these people millions. Then they asked me to look through their new web site so I pointed out some really embarrassing grammatical errors and false claims. Turns out that page was written by the new CEO whose ego really couldn't take that. Bullying, mistreatment, harrassed etc until I was burnt out. I was a sheep and I don't know if I even want to get back on that treadmill.

TRUE friends are so damn rare everywhere. Work, church, social groups. I work alone and have very little social life these days. End result, though, is that i have the same amount of genuine friends as ever. Very little wheat relative to chaff.

OP you're on point. I've worked with a good amount of people in my life, but just like you I only keep in contact with 1. I've seen way too many people get into drama at work, it's not worth it.

YES yes i totally agree with you. Real friends don't snitch nor complain about you behind your back.

I am 47 but this year i made a major turn and decided to put people back in there place the ones that don't respect me. So far so good i don't go to work to make friends, not assholes like i work with anyways.

I think this applies to every workplace and not just corporate IT.

But in my experience the mistake to make is to believe that co-workers care about you more than surface level, not that you are friendly to them. Like they might think you are a nice person and good to talk to, but just don't assume that they really give a rats ass about you.

But being friendly to co-workers and your boss is not a disadvantage, cause lets say someone at work fucked up and the blame game starts, then you are less likely to be the scapegoat. Also if the fuckup was indeed your fault, then you might get a slap on the hand instead of being fired. It is only an advantage for you if you are well liked at the workplace.

So I personally don't mind listening to what you call sob-stories, as it does build rapport. People love it if you ask questions about them and listen to their stories. It makes you more likeable. But again that doesn't mean that they truly care about you, they just think you are a nice person. People only truly care about their families and old friendships that they established when they were young. Most adults don't form new friendships easily. They are busy with families and already established friendships and don't have the time or even want to make new friends. I think that's why it's so surface level at work, and why it seems fake. If you realise this as I did eventually, then it doesn't really bother you that they aren't really your friends. You are also not at work to make friends, but to get payed.

I used to be disappointed that, when I was younger, I couldn't get along with more people. I even made some self improvement effort to become more likeable.

Today, I myself dislike many people. It's really more like a popularity contest. If you get lucky, your colleagues are mature enough to just maintain a basic popularity, gaining them access to support and social interaction. Nothing wrong with that. If you have bad luck, however, you will come across toxic people, gossipers, cliques and even sociopaths ruining someone else's entire life just for entertainment and a minor benefit.

NPCs can become a nightmare. Most of us look down upon them, maybe rightfully so, but never underestimate their hatred. They can become really violent when media wants them to.
