My husband and I are newly married. He was divorced in 2015 after 25 years of an awful marriage to a cheating catholic school teacher (the ironyπŸ™„). Side note - I did not break up the marriage. Anyway, he pays 80K in alimony and her salary is 50k so she is very comfortable. She also got half of everything in the divorce. I am independent and make a very good salary on my own...bought my own home, etc.

We recently found out that when he retires or loses his job and requests a modification, the family courts could look at my income contribution and make him continue to pay...aka I would have to pay if he isn't working. Now I want to preface that I have no problem taking care of my husband but I am not ok with the courts taking my income to give to someone that could easily go into the public school system and double their salary. She also has a graduate degree.

My question is... is it crazy if we: 1: divorce but stay together 2: have wills drafted that leave eachother as beneficiaries, etc. 3: invest his retirement money in trust and other avenues that would make it difficult to access in the future. 4: If none of that works, leave the country together and live our lives free and clear of the US and her forever.
