My [f 43] boyfriend’s [m 44] STBX wife [f 44] was diagnosed with very serious cancer 2 years after he left her. (Full disclosure, our relationship started while we were both still married.) They don’t have kids.

My boyfriend had very little communication with his ex, but when she got diagnosed with cancer, he stopped communicating with her completely. He even got a new phone number (for work purposes) and didn’t give her his new number.

I’m not proud to say their marriage ended not because of anything she did, but because he fell in love with me. As far as I can tell, she has remained very polite and civil to him, even somewhat nice in her infrequent communication.

My exH and I have no problem talking to each other. Despite being divorced, and even though I left him for my boyfriend, I know if I got cancer my exH would be concerned for me, as I would if he got sick.

My boyfriend left his ex and sadly broke her heart very badly. She’s remained kind to him despite that. But he almost acts as if he’s erased her. She has a very serious cancer and he doesn’t reach out and didn’t even give her his new phone number.

He seems unable to communicate with her. Even before she was sick, but since she got sick he’s really turned away from her.

He doesn’t say anything bad about her (he really doesn’t say anything about her ever) and by all accounts she was very good to him.

Not that I want him being best friends with her, but I would have expected him to be concerned about her being so sick. Why can’t he talk to her at all and if he loved her once (they were together for 16 years) why would he be so apathetic about her being so sick with cancer? Men, I’d love your insight on this.

tl;dr why doesn’t he seem to care that his former wife has cancer?
