This saddens me. I was accused of harassment in High-School and now have a legitimate fear of women. I want nothing from them but to just let me be. I hold my breath passing a girl on the street or opening a door or hell even smiling (The last one has been minimized thanks to masks and everyone looking neutral all the time). And now not only are we targeted more to be murdered, but they expect us to take a bullet for a stranger IF they happen to be a woman.

Men should be active bystanders and intervene if a situation looks odd or someone looks scared or uncomfortable.

I think people who make statements like this have no experience of violence.

Just like we do not want a tiny minority of sexual predators to keep all women and children away from unknown men, we do not want a tiny minority of Karens and even false accusers to keep men away from women altogether. With a bit extra attention to respect, social cues, and a finely honed radar for personality disorders, I think speaking to women is still fine. I do it all the time with no negative consequences.

It is still a problem. But not the end of the world. Just like with racism, climate change, and terrorism.

I came here today because I just heard Harriet Harmon (former UK women's and equality minister) on the news using the murder of that 33 year old woman as an excuse to demonize men. She was talking about the "male threat" women face.

Jess Phillips was also reading out the names of women killed by men, saying that if that number of people were murdered of it'd be a national crisis.

That ignores the fact that 70% of murder victims in the UK are male. Apparently though, if you're a male murder victim and the perpetrator was male, you don't really count, or it was your own fault.

I guess we also need to divide murders by race, height, and income, and ignore any tall victims who had tall perpetrators, black victims with black perpetrators, and so on. 🙄

Bigots piss me off, especially when they have the power and privilege of Phillips and Harmon, and they get a national platform to spout their hatred, while I have no voice.

I’m glad I found this post. I saw my Instagram flooded with all the things mentioned in the article (tips on how men can help, what women do to be safe etc...) and all I could think is how this poor woman’s murder has been co-opted by people to feed their victim narrative.

Is crossing the road really an effective tactic to stop being murdered? How many men have had someone in their sights and then thought ‘Ah well, better luck next time’ because they moved to the other side of the street?

Rather than focusing on how a poor person has been murdered (allegedly with the assistance of a woman), the focus is on ‘evil men’ amd how this monolith is apparently at fault. The way it’s being talked about, you would think there are murder and rape gangs roaming the street and men are throwing women out into the wilderness every night to run the gauntlet.

Another sexual assault statistic of 96% has now appeared and will most likely be quoted from now on (a convenient increase from the often quoted 1 in 3 stat). Like someone else mentioned, the fact that this is national news shows how rare this is and yet it’s being touted as something that is on the verge of happening every day. All it’s doing is making more women fear for their lives without good reason and focusing on (self generated) feelings rather than actual statistics. I quick Google shows that roughly twice as many men are victims of homicide in the UK each year, but ask the average person on the street and surely they would think the opposite.

It’s so frustrating that saying anything that I’ve written here in real life to someone would immediately mark me out as ‘uncaring’ at best or ‘misogynistic’ at worst.

Whats with this holding keys bullshit. This is what happens when you disarm the population. You actually make the physical differences between men and women matter even more, when it comes to defending against violence. At least carry some pepper spray, holy shit. Like, who thinks that keys are a good self defense weapon? That's just idiotic. Even as a man, if I defended myself with keys I would expect to get my ass kicked. Get a real fucking self defense weapon already. A knife, a gun, a taser. Something other than fucking keys.

Women just expect men to keep them safe I guess, create an environment where they specifically can do dangerous things (like walking around alone at night) with impunity and without worry. Whereas men actually take precautions to keep themselves and others safe. I don't know a single man that would say they feel totally safe walking alone downtown in a big city at night. You want equality? How about this: everyone is equally responsible for their own self defense.

This is like if they told black people to cross the street when passing white people to make them more comfortable. That would be rightly declared terrible and racist. But it's acceptable to be prejudiced against half the fucking species for some reason.
