Come up with a funny backstory. For example, I have a surgical scar on my cheek, and joke about getting into a scuffle with some gang bangers.

Some people I know go the tattoo route, but they have shitty tattoos bc the art was not as important as the ink.

I'd suggest going with a fictional zoo story where you fought meerkats.

I have a massive scar on my left wrist from a dare that involved a metal file as a teen. I won, and it turned nasty-looking with infection.

That's exactly how I tell the story.

Depending on the girl, a backstory of self injury might be intriguing. I definitely know chicks in the kink community who'd cream over it.

Most people expect these types of cuts to be on the forearm, so if you're not willing to reveal your darker side, you have some plausible deniability (you could say it was from an accident at work while working on cars or whatever).

Ideally, you will one day get to a place where you will have compassion for yourself and what you must have been going through. Then you will be able to be honest about why they're there, and what you learned from the experience. You could turn it into an intimacy building experience.

Regardless, don't bring it up before they do, and be comfortable with any approach you take.

Tell her you don't want to talk about it. You don't need to answer any question or explain anything you don't like. So change the subject.
