Like many women, I have had mostly male bosses (white, cis, rich ones of course) and, with the exception of one, they all sucked. They all expected me to work long ass hours for very little pay/salary. They all worked long ass hours and bragged repeatedly about it. They blamed me for shit they did. None of them had a clue about women or life as a woman.
One man told me he knew what it was like to be a single mom because his wife worked a lot in the summer. (She was a paraprofessional for students with disabilities during the schoolyear...she didn't work in the summertime).
One told me that if I wanted to lose weight I should hire a personal chef like he did. Never mind the fact that I was working at a job that paid not even a dollar over a living wage and, again, a single mother.
One told me that I shouldn't be happy for employees who quit our company because I was in HR. The employees in question had decided to take their personal aid job into nursing careers. Of course I was happy for them!
One told me to pop a pill (I have a mental disorder) every time I got angry or upset about something. Because me being angry or upset HAS to be because I have a mental illness and not because he is a massive asshat.
Funny thing, all the female managers I've ever had I'm still very good friends with. We give EACH OTHER references. We talk all the time. We commiserate with each other. And we have each other's backs.
For instance, I just got a job in my field after YEARS of trying to break into the industry at a livable wage. My current job has okay-ish pay but this job is dollars more per hour. The hours are better. I'm not on-call. Insurance is infinitely cheaper since my current company decided to get us insurance that would cost me over half my paycheck every month for myself and my kids. Everything is perfect.
Told my female supervisors and got a lot of "YAY! Good for you!" and "I'm so excited for you!" and "This is amazing! You totally deserve this!" and "Let me help you. I have a contact I'm going to give your information to!" I mean, I was on the phone for at least thirty minutes with them talking about how psyched I was to start this new job.
I emailed HR and sent a short "Thank you for this opportunity" email. The next day, the owner of the company (male) calls me. Tells me that this is a hard time for the company for me to quit. That this is a big shock to him. Side note: If he had taken two minutes to read my resume he'd know that I was in no way working in my field of study. Asked me why I was quitting. I explained my reasonings (see above). He asked if I could stay on longer to "assist in the transition." No congratulations. No wishing me well. Nothing but "hey, we need to pay you shit money to help our company with the transition even though we're not offering you any incentive to do so."
It just sucks that more women aren't in roles of management. Women seem to genuinely be happy for each other when we succeed. From what I can tell, men take all the credit yet blame the "little women" when things go wrong. All this time I thought I was a shit employee. Turns out, I just had shit male managers.
