As we all know, it was International Men's Day yesterday (I hope you all had a refreshing day), and many of us will have inevitably made posts on social media to promote the day (here's mine), highlighting the issues which men face that often go unheard of or ignored. I made a post in my university course group chat (I study Philosophy), trying to send positive vibes to all the guys, but all I got was an absolute barrage of negativity. It was pretty much an opportunity for the people in the chat to grab their pitchforks and join the front against what I was saying.

As the post I made to this sub yesterday suggests, I was put in a very unpleasant situation and I'm going to describe what my experience was, so I can show how behind we are on men's issues and how it's such a travesty that it's controversial to support them. So, my experience of International Men's Day

-I made a post on Facebook, which was well-received in terms of the comments/reactions I got (I have a lot of men who've been discriminated against/been abused on my friends list, so I wanted to show them my support)

-I sent a message into my group chat, as stated above

-I was met with instant tension and anger; I was told that men's problems are a result of the patriarchy and that Women's Day is just painted as men as a bunch of radical feminists complaining

-I was effectively ganged up on (bear in mind this chat has around 50 people in and a good 10 went after me) for promoting men's rights and what I said was deemed to be "bullshit", as the patriarchy affects women awfully

-A rhetorical suggestion was made that men should experience oppression from the dawn of time, like women were, and see how we feel (something along those lines)

-I was told that IMD effectively ignores women's issues and pretends they don't exist (again, absolute nonsense)

-I went to a lecture with many of the people from this chat in attendance and was met with a very icy stare from several people as I walked in, and I ended up sat on a row of 20 people on my own, with the row to myself

-I was told very seethingly by a girl sat behind me (who I thought was a friend) that my post was disgusting and it ignored women's issues and was effectively offensive bullshit

-I was told (very pompously and obnoxious, may I add) that I should apologise to all of my coursemates for my IMD post on Facebook

-A message (aimed at me) was sent to my group chat by said girl, saying, "...international men's day is like when at the racism awareness talk loads of white people refused to acknowledge their white privilege" - this message was received with a lot of support and agreement from a considerable proportion of my coursemates, so it isn't a minority opinion

-I'm effectively an outcast amongst the people I thought were my friends, and they all think I'm a misogynist

I hate to be the kind of person to rant, but is it just me, or is this severely sexist against men and very damaging? I know universities are meant to be very "woke" and progressive, but this is ridiculous. The fact that I was instantly shut down by so many people (I think this was just bullying tactics, but I don't want to play like a victim) shows how regressive the views of the majority are. It's nonsense that promoting men's rights is seen as controversial and oppressive to women. On International Women's Day, if I did something like this, I'd be screamed at and called a rampant misogynist, but it's okay to shoot IMD down. Universities are meant to be places where you encounter new ideas and have free speech, but this suggests otherwise.
