I stumbled on TRP a few years ago through this Girl Writes What video. Since watching that video I have ferociously devoured all that I can on TRP and TRP-related content, from essays to stand-up comedy to vlogs.
Every day I am grateful that I swallowed TRP: my relationship with my now-husband is amazing, I feel like we are as close as a man and woman can be. There's just one thing I'm missing out on — true friends.
My social life has taken a bashing since I had my son a year ago, and we move around a lot for my husband's work making it hard to make solid friends, but this month we are in my hometown and this weekend I'm meeting three old friends for dinner and drinks.
We became friends through roller derby (probably the world's most feminist sport) about ten years ago, and I've been away from my home country on and off for the past six years. We haven't met up, all four of us, since I swallowed TRP.
Ladies, if you'd be so kind, I'd love to hear of your experiences of navigating your social lives post-swallow. I love my girlfriends, and while it might not be hard to just grit my teeth and agree with everything they say for one evening, this won't be the last time I see them, nor will it be the last time I'll be in this situation of feeling like I'm hiding in the proverbial closet.
Is it possible to be your authentic self and still have friends who are plugged in? Thanks for reading :)
UPDATE: Night out went really well. There were quite a few moments of group moans about husbands, where I felt like I was expected to join in, and managed to not join in just for the sake of it. One girl was much harder to connect with, she spent most of the night moaning about her husband, which I did not enjoy. It just highlighted that I need to spend less time with her, move towards people I feel better around, even if they don't mirror my beliefs 100%. Thanks so much for all of your advice, ladies!
