Also wanted to add, I think there's a happy place where the two sides of your personality can ADD to each other-- as other commenters have said you don't need to choose. I've heard many great female writers say that being in love, being a wife, and being a mother intensified their experience of the world, sharpened their observational skills, and dramatically expanded their emotional universe in ways that made them much better writers. Conversely, I believe that taking time to write helps me gain the emotional intelligence, introspection, and self-knowledge to be a better partner to my man.

You should use your artistic skills to better your home and make it a more beautiful and visually stunning environment for your husband and children. You should use your writing skills to write children's books for your own children, which you might also be able to sell as supplemental income for the family.

I'm actually totally unsuited to housewifery. I'm not a bad cook, but I come from a long line of slobs (my husband had to show me how to operate the vacuum cleaner), and I'm better in an office than with children. Happily, hubby is a genius when it comes to kids, and he's becoming a teacher, which can be pretty friendly to spending quality time with said children.

Either way, how much is it that you're dreaming about being a housewife and how much are you practicing those skills? Not as much value in reading recipes as in getting practice making a tasty, healthy meal on time and figuring out how to remove stubborn stains from clothing.

Regardless, writing is flexible enough that it can fit pretty easily into life as a SAHM or a working person. Your time to devote to it will vary is all. You don't really need to spend all your time thinking about appealing recipes as long as you get a good dinner done at the right time. Your interest in collecting new recipes etc will naturally vary over time. Some days you'll be thrilled about reading a new cookbook (my library has so many), other days, not so much. That's true of pretty much everyone who likes recipes.

I think what this comes down to is what is more important to you, being a housewife, or writing. I've actually been in the exact same boat you're in currently. I'm a stay at home wife, but I also love writing. Not to be published, but just because it's satisfying and makes me happy. What I did was I did everything I needed to do that day while my husband was at work, and if I had time left before he came home, I would write. That's still how I do things, so maybe give that a try.

I'm someone who has a passion for writing too. If I'm in the zone, I can write for hours and I usually just zone the whole world out while immersing myself into a fantasy world.

It's not wrong, and I've actually been told that this passion and focus is attractive. Just don't use it as a means of procrastination. If your other duties are getting put off because you "had a moment of inspiration", then there may need to be some mental reordering.

You don't need to choose between the things you love. It doesn't work like that. If you're still feeling conflicted, try finishing your daily chores before sitting down to write. I've found that helps me put off using it to procrastinate too.

Cultivate your passions well. Writing is an amazing passion to have!

If your housewifing, maybe you can do it as a concentrated block of time a couple of times a week where you have free time? Have a clear schedule for it?
