This bothers me to no end. I’m not at all a Shakespeare expert, but having studied English lit at uni for a few years now I noticed how common it is to apply any wild idea to Shakespeare. Was he gay? Was he a woman? Was he X? It’s because we don’t actually know an awful lot about him, compared to the knowledge we have of similarly famous writers. His work also lends itself to viewing from many different sociocultural angles, so it’s quite easy to adhere some wild concept to his work and/or his life and “make it work”. In my personal opinion, there’s no use for any of this.
