Just stop making men wear full suits and pants etc and this won’t be an issue.

[–]homeslice26no 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or they could wear suits and pants too instead of dresses either one will do

Often men in warmer climates do not wear suits. Case in point, tech companies in California or offices in most hot tropical climates.

Fuck you. Put on a sweater.

[–]DJ-Roukan 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, 97 men die each week just doing their job. 22 veterans commit suicide each week due to lack of care. Men are routinely incarcerated under false accusations, homeless, failed healthcare, die earlier, boys being raped and sexually abused, father's being exiled from their children's lives, 21 thousand male suicides a week, boys being bullied, abused, accused by teachers through-out their education

Pales in comparison to the horror women face, having to sometimes put on a sweater.

We guys should be ashamed of ourselves...

A year or two ago I remember reading a study from Japan where men didn't wear a tie and suit and money spent on electricity went down a significant bit. Companies should stop forcing men to wear ties and suits. This is better for the environment, and the workers (male and female)

How about they just wear a sweater. When work attire for men is in many cases a full suit, the temps need to be kept down.

The crappy study didn't instruct people to dress uniformly. How stupid! Were the reviewers sleeping? Now, the conclusions of the bogus study (with "identified" estimates of the effect of temperature on gendered differences in cognitive performance) are all over the internet.

The crappy study didn't instruct people to dress uniformly. How stupid!

I think that may have been the point.

Were the reviewers sleeping?

They care primarily that the correct statistical methods were used in the analysis, they rarely look at the data.

Now, the conclusions of the bogus study (with "identified" estimates of the effect of temperature on gendered differences in cognitive performance) are all over the internet.

I don't have any problem with the idea that men and women have different temperature preferences, oddly enough though, my wife is more bothered by both heat and cold than I am. The question is, where do we go with this? Unless dress codes are changed to allow men to adjust to too warm temperatures, which I doubt will happen, then this will be another injustice in action.

[–]AmbitiousAbalone[S] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that may have been the point.

If gender was the treatment being studied, it would have been better to explain away the effect of dressing by using it as one of the controls (or having people dress uniformly to not let it affect the results). Without that, the study is better described as the effect of dressing and temperature on cognitive performance. There is nothing fundamental about gender being studied here.

I would assume that everyone would dress appropriately for the ambient temperature the day of the experiment, so everyone would be dressed equally with regards to temperature.

Further...

  • In all experimental sessions, participants worked on the same tasks. However, the temperature of the laboratory differed between the sessions. The average temperature in a session ranged between 16.19 and 32.57 Celsius, which we varied using AC and electronic heaters. The participants were told before entering the laboratory that the experiment is about temperature and that they are allowed to leave the laboratory at any time. No participant left the laboratory before or during the session. Table 4 displays temperature variations in the experiment.

There is nothing fundamental about gender being studied here.

Maybe, but maybe the sexes (not 'genders') do react differently to temperatures, temperature changes and other stimuli.

[–]TheJazzProphet 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You'd think they could just, I don't know, wear pants and a jacket like the men do. It's a lot easier to get warm in a cold area than to cool down in a warm area.

Usually it's difficult to find sources, but success came rather quickly, interestingly, this is not paywalled.

  • Introduction
  • The fact that women generally prefer higher indoor temperatures than men is well supported by survey evidence [1–4]. This difference in preferences, sometimes referred to as the “battle of the thermostat,” is passionately discussed in popular culture and has received considerable media attention [5–7]. Surprisingly then, the research examining the impact of temperature on cognitive performance [8] has not explored a link between gender and temperature response.
  • To address this gap we ran a large laboratory experiment in which over 500 individuals were asked to perform a set of cognitive tasks (math, verbal and cognitive reflection), subject to experimentally manipulated indoor temperatures. We find that, for math and verbal tasks, consistent with their subjective temperature preferences, women perform better both on the extensive and intensive margins at high temperatures than at low temperatures (i.e., women both attempt to solve, and correctly solve more math and verbal tasks at higher vs. lower temperatures). Men display the opposite pattern, performing better at lower temperatures. In contrast to math and verbal tasks, temperature has no impact on cognitive reflection test performance for either gender.
  • Overall, our results suggest that gender is an important factor not only in determining the impact of temperature on comfort but also on productivity and cognitive performance. Additionally, given the lack of attention to gender in mediating the impact of temperature on performance, our results may explain in part the inconsistent results of previous studies on the relationship between temperature and cognitive performance.

Wait, can they say "Overall, our results suggest that gender is an important factor not only in determining the impact of temperature on comfort but also on productivity and cognitive performance"? I mean, 'gender' is a social construct, right? I'd expect the trans shock troops to be readying an attack as we read this.

The temperature range they tested in is well outside the range of normal office temperatures, from 16.19 to 32.57˚C (61.142 to 90.626F).

And the results have been normalized, so I can't tease out how much less or how much better men and women do from these numbers, it may not be significant. And I'd also like to point out that initial studies are rarely accurate and that social studies have very poorly reproducablity, so even if done correctly, the results would not be strong enough to warrant action. I guess unless the results are PC enough, eh?
