Good to know some people just live their lives and don’t listen to the media’s bullshit

Remember we’re talking about a senator who claims she worked her ass off, but in reality, her knees and mouth are what set her on her course.
(For those who didn’t see the story, she came out of college and started banging former SF mayor Willie Brown, who got her appointed to jobs she was wholly unqualified for)

The way she was smiling at Kavanaugh during the fake accusations at his hearing really made me sick. She and Booker are pure trash.

She’s probably smart enough but she lies about many issues to gain support, especially from women and black people. The only reason she got into politics is cuz she slept with an old dude who appointed her, let’s not act like she’s some inspirational person or something

If you don't follow public health data, this statement might seem untrue. But the fact is that pregnancy deaths and complications among the black population is far higher than for other demographics. There's a reason for it, and unconscious bias might be that reason. After all, it's the reason for a lot of other bad stuff the black population has to deal with.
[–]tmoneSpends too much time with ass cheeks spread apart 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

also, more black people are aborted than are born. thats an alarming stat im sure you are ok with.
[+]KiteLighter -9 points-8 points-7 points 7 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link
I didn't say that black women die from prejudice. I said that unconscious bias MAY help explain the disparity.
And it's true, I am OK with people deciding who gets to use their body. If I had a kid with kidney disease I wouldn't be forced to donate my kidney because I get to decide who gets to use my body. Likewise with pregnancy. (I'm just lucky I'm a dude who can't get pregnant - it seems pretty unpleasant.)

[–]tmoneSpends too much time with ass cheeks spread apart 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
cool cool. now back up your claim that it has to do with bias.
I said that unconscious bias MAY help explain the disparity.
you haven no evidence of this. at all. for all we know its biology. you know, like how black community suffers higher than normal cases of lactose intolerance or sickle cell.
[–]KiteLighter 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link
The evidence for it is that there are many other areas of life where unconscious bias certainly does effect the black community, so it's not unreasonable to ask if this is also one of those areas.
I'll supply an analogy to help you think about it: every year I get a certain type of worm in my garden that effects my plants negatively. This year I haven't seen the worms, but I see an effect that's similar to other years when the worms have been the problem. I don't know it's the worms this year, since I have no direct evidence. But it's not unreasonable to say it might be the worms. (Likewise, it might be something else - a bad batch of seeds, maybe?) Get it?
[–]tmoneSpends too much time with ass cheeks spread apart 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
naw. thats not how it works. you cant just use intuition.
[–]KiteLighter 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
You need to explain a bit more. I don't understand your point in this context.
[–]solrecon 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
basically /u/tmone is saying that you cannot simply use one topic to justify another. science isn't about prove through assumption. a racial bias in one area doesn't necessarily mean a racial bias in another. i have read these articles this morning as well and all that seems to be said is that more african american mothers are dying than other ethnicities. racism, is not the answer in any of the articles though, simply a notice that they are dying more frequently. since there is no actual factual reason, we cannot assume any without actual proof that racism is the reason. which most likely it is due to lack of funding on those areas compared to MD/nursing units being racist. I've been involved with the healthcare community in south florida for many many years and I have yet to meet a racist nurse/MD. I have met a homophobic nurse before, but no racists yet.
[–]Goo-Goo-GJoob -3 points-2 points-1 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But not too unpleasant to just go ahead and let random dudes nut in you till you regret it. If you were a woman of course.
[–]KiteLighter 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
? I guess I'm confused, but I'll try to reply. If I miss your point could you explain more?
Sex isn't unpleasant, I agree. Consent to sex is not consent to get pregnant. Giving consent to getting pregnant is not consent to staying pregnant. Women can have sex with just 1 committed partner and get pregnant, so I wouldn't call that "letting random dudes nut in you till you regret it." Do you think a woman should be forced to use her body in a way she doesn't consent to?
[–]brildenlanch 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Generally responsible women with one commited partner won't mistakenly get pregnant. Birth control is readily available and adoption is an option if that's not possible for you.
And yeah, I do. It's not just her life or her body at that point.
[–]KiteLighter -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
OK, how about this situation - the child is discovered to have kidney failure, and requires a kidney to continue living, and you, the father are a match. Should you be required to give the kid a kidney? If not, why is it different than forcing the mother to use her body to sustain the kid's life? It seems identical to me.
[–]brildenlanch 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
A failing kidney is beyond someone's control. Getting pregnant is not. If you want to ask if rape or incest fits into this I believe those should be the only exceptions, as well as if there is a chance the mother won't make it through the birth due to a medical condition.
I don't think the two situations are even remotely similar. When I lay down as a woman and choose to have sex with a man I know there's a chance I'll get pregnant. There's no way to "know" if someone will have a medical condition.
[–]KiteLighter 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Getting pregnant can absolutely be beyond someone's control. Birth control fails.
What about if you allowed your baby to eat something in your home that caused the kidney failure? That was within your control, and now the baby needs a kidney. Should you be forced to give your kidney? If not, why not?

[+]ozarkan18 -9 points-8 points-7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There’s actually plenty of research to back up her claim of racial bias in the medical field. Black women are seen as more dramatic and hysterical and as such their pain levels are not taken as seriously as those of white women. It has happened to a black friend of mine with all three of her kids, the last one almost resulting in her death. Black women have a disproportionately higher rate of maternal mortality in modern hospitals in the US that has been proven to have nothing to do with the level of prenatal care they did or did not receive. Institutional racism is real- and I’m a middle class white man saying this.
[–]gummybear3g -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
She is right and there is plenty of data to support this. One example: https://www.heart.org/en/news/2019/02/20/why-are-black-women-at-such-high-risk-of-dying-from-pregnancy-complications

[–]BearsWithGuns 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Fairly unconvincing article tbh. The evidence is the opinions of two doctors who are specifically working for equity programs. So basically no evidence.
There is however a somewhat compelling reference to a report which concludes that bias is a factor in healthcare treatment. It would be interesting to see how much of a factor it really is and how the report came to this conclusion. Is it a proper study with statistical evidence or just a written report? Unfortunately the report is not linked as far as I can tell and I could not find it specifically online, although I didn't look super hard for it.
EDIT: Found it
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25032386/
It's a long one. I honestly dont have the interest to read much past the abstract right now, so I'll just accept that bias may play a small role in treatment in some way for black people or other minorities. Seems much of this disparity comes from socioeconomic and cultural barriers. If any of you medical professionals or statistical fanatics actually want to delve into it and analyze it, it's there.

It is the only response needed for people that are heavily invested in identity politics. Any criticism of their ideology is labeled "sexist", "misogynist", or "racist." Instead of defending this statement by Kamala Harris with reason and facts. it is much easier to label people who question identity politics as "bad."
