I don't particularly mind the pill, abortion, or easy divorce but I think we do need to learn to be responsible for our actions when that responsibility isn't being enforced on us by biology.

I really think that some traditional ideas are morally right. I don't really want to force them on people, but they clear some things up in a big way. If you read any mythology, especially Joseph Campbell, you'll see this. I think Carl Jung talked about this stuff as well but I am not entirely sure.

The first major ceremony that children undergo traditionally would be a naming ceremony. This happens after birth, once it's obvious that the child will probably survive (something we do pretty well with these days, but infant mortality was a big issue for our ancestors). Once named in front of the community, everyone knows that the child exists and that one couple in particular is responsible for it. A pastor, representing some deity, essentially reminds the parents of this duty.

The second will be a coming of age ceremony of some sort. Sometimes for both sexes, but almost always for boys. With girls, it's generally pretty obvious when they are coming of age and they don't need to be told what their new responsibilities are or when they begin. For boys, it's less obvious so there's a ceremony of some sort to mark the occasion. Generally, that ceremony tells the young man that he's now responsible for his own future, and if he wants to be accepted by the community he is going to have to work hard to achieve it.

The third is often some sort of societal acceptance, and this can be combined with the coming of age in some cases. This is the Amish son or daughter coming back from their time in the world and choosing to turn away from it and join the Church.

Fourth is marriage. This is where we promise to each other that we want to have sex with each other, essentially, and that we both accept whatever responsibility that brings.

There are of course more ceremonies to signal the transitions into mastery, old age, and death but I really focus on those first four. The important thing is that they all signal a transition of responsibility: the responsibility of care, being handed down from a Deity to the parents to the new child. The responsibility that the child now has to learn enough to join the society as a full member, then the responsibilities that the now adult takes on as a full contributing member. Then, marriage and the responsibilities taken on there.

The thing is, a lot of modern societal constructs are designed to subvert the context behind these ceremonies. We can get rid of that context and even the ceremony itself, but we still need to have that transfer of responsibility. When we had the ceremonies and remembered what they were for, young men and women knew what they were responsible to do. For young men, there is no more coming of age ceremony where they are told what they need to do to join society. There are vestiges of ceremonies for joining society in things like Fraternity initiations or joining the military, but the context seems to be lost. We have lots of sex before marriage, so we have to talk about things like consent now. What is marriage, but one giant asking for consent, verifying it with the family, declaring your willingness before an entire community, and signing a legal contact stating your intentions?
