Too bad this graph isn't shown as a percentage of population, instead of just total numbers.

Huh. I have read several times that divorce is down. I knew marriage also was, but this appears to show that divorce, as a percentage of marriages, is up.
But I suspect this should probably be # of divorces plotted with total married people (instead of marriages / year). Marriages accumulate, and lots of divorced people remarry.

jees, i wonder why the amount of mariage took a dive in 1942-45 and why divorce skyrocketed in 1946... Looks like someone came back home from fighting the nazis and found some still lived under their roof or something

Men are increasingly waking up, I see.
[–]YoubigdumbSOB 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Not so. This trend ALSO includes children of unwed mothers and children without a father in the home, two things that directly correlate to MANY bad outcomes for boys.
Marriage is not a bad thing. Marriage to a fucked up person IS a bad thing. You are VERY mistaken to think that marriage is inherently bad and the statistical data on that is crystal clear.

the current state of divorce/custody-laws and parental rights is a bad thing

The current state of divorce laws and the ease of it creating bad outcomes for both fathers and children must put off a lot of men. Then why do many men need to get married if there are women around who will give them sex without commitment? this too for many men will give them no reason to get married. The only thing any sensible man needs to do is be very protective of their genetic material, ie wear a condom and make sure they get rid of it. It has become too easy I think to get divorced and not enough is done to make sure that those getting married are doing so with their eyes open. It is interesting that you will see loads of things about men not wanting to get married, the disgruntled 30+ woman not finding a suitable partner and the majority of divorces being instigated by women. Men as a group seem to be increasingly put off marriage with more and more saying that seems pointless.

precisely.
Denmark did something rather clever in redesigning their divorce laws:
When you file for divorce there's a 3 months waiting period. So you go to the authorities say "I want a divorce", they say "Fine, we have registered your request. Come back in 3 months and confirm your request. Then it will go forward." Most never return...

Marriage is not a bad thing.
Opinion: marriage per se isn't a bad thing. The bad thing is societal pressure dictating that every adult human needs to be married. Some people should marry, some shouldn't. The problem is couples who get married because they were raised to believe they had to. Both the rising of the divorce rate and the lowering if the marriage rate, I'm, are the result of people coming to realize this. Eventually, hopefully, the graph will show a lower but signification marriage rate, and a near zero divorce rate.

why did so many people divorce after ww2?

Never met a married couple truly happy. stabilized at best. But never really happy. That's no way to go through life.

There are some happily married couples. My wife isn't anything like any woman I'd been with before. Everything we do is on an equal footing, and we've never had the classic issues so many couples have, because neither of us really give a shit about all that. We've been the same ever since we met. It is possible.
We walked past a couple in Ikea, who were assembling furniture by the exit. She was yelling at him about it being the wrong size, and he was yelling at her about putting it together wrong. We just found it hilarious.

Like I said. Stabilized.
[–]Miffly 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think you might have met too many of the wrong people. I've never been happier. I wouldn't be married if I only felt stabilised.

It's a figurative ticking time bomb. All it takes is one word to the police and you're fucked for life.

Maybe in the US. Your country does sound rather scary.

It's fine for male submissives, I suppose. The male is generally just a member of staff.
When I was in a restaurant a few months ago, three couples came in and the same thing happened every time. They came through the door, went to the bar, ordered their meals, and then came to get a table. The woman led the way, she then took the best seat (the one in the corner, the one with its back to the wall), and the male took the other (the one with its rear in the passageway, the one furthest from the fire - it was cold and there was a large open fire). And it doesn't stop there. The woman gets to choose in almost every other activity. I know. I've done the same thing myself. That invariably happens in a male/female couple.

Yes. I always compare it to another accessory. Purse, car, house. Servant
[–]Wisemanner -5 points-4 points-3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's what it is - the male is an accessory. Notice how wives always refer to "my" house, even if the male has paid for it.

My buddy always tells me how he envies my life. Travel, no pressure from a wife. But he will never change his own life.
