A lot of the current crop of successful women musicians would be uncomfortable with anyone zeroing in on their gender. With good reason, piously opining about such things – particularly if you’re a man – has been serially mocked with the cliched journalistic category of “women in rock”, an idea so hoary that it has its own Wikipedia page.
The funny thing is, rock and roll isn't even culturally relevant anymore (and the author actually mentioned that in his article too). Sure, people still listen to it, but it's an older, niche audience, like jazz. Turn on a hits station anywhere in the world and you're pretty unlikely to hear an electric guitar.
