Am I the only one who thinks movies and tv portray violence on men as funny way more than they do women?

Men can be dismembered, impaled, guillotined, crushed, have their necks broken by THE HERO.

I'm pretty sure that that if you only counted the career of the Three Stooges you'd have more comedic acts of violence against men played for comedy than all the ones against women in the history of movies and TV.

I remember when I was watching Pulp Fiction at the theater where Vincent blasted Marvin in the face. I laughed out loud in the theater. I think everyone did. Because that scene was funny. I can't imagine how the audience's reaction would be if it were Uma Thurman's character who had a funny near death experience herself because Vincent left his heroin unattended.

And commonly men are portrayed as blundering, hard headed, idiots. While the young women is a genius that can solve all the problems if she can only get the patriarchy to listen.

I’d say that’s probably true that men getting hurt is used for humor more often then women, but I wouldn’t say it never happens to women. I’ve never heard of that show the Mick, but google says it’s a dark comedy with a female lead (meaning it was probably meant for a female audience) and it’s been canceled after 2 seasons. I don’t think it’s too out there for a show like that to have violence against men used as comedy because it’s intentionally dark.

As far as the other side Family guy definitely uses Meg getting hurt as a source of comedy all the time. Same goes for Always Sunny to a lesser extent I think. The only specific example I can think of is the boxing episode. If you haven’t seen it the humor in that is pretty dark. It’s a bit of a balancing act to make violence against women funny because it can often feel like punching down.

I just wanna say I do agree that the trope of the man getting hurt does get old, but dark humor definitely crosses over into women occasionally at the very least.

There can be no debate on this issue. Its not a question. Its a fact.

ANY simple analysis of media clearly proves this is the case, with men treated as or portrayed as bumbling idiots, misogynists, or assaulted by women who are portrayed as good, heroic, smart, and wise, or as victims of violent men.

Be very wary of anyone who tries to claim otherwise. Seriously. Its not a debate at all, just fact. It takes a deliberate blindness to pretend otherwise.

violence against men is generally seen as funnier, especially if it's violence perpetrated by a woman. I'm not sure if this is a bad thing, per se, and I certainly wouldn't want to ban violence from the media because I'm very anti-censorship, but subverting expectations is part of comedy and the expectation is that men are stronger (and more violent) than women, so when some jacked up side of beef with a vagina and a very small hat beats on a guy it tends to make people laugh. Just see the little old lady with a handbag scene in many movies I can't be bothered to name.

I still remember "one of these days.... POW! STRAIGHT TO THE MOON!" -- but yeah, we don't get to see that any more.

Here's a neat trick: Watch a movie. Anything made over the past 20 years or so. What happens when a woman in the movie is facing certain death? Something happens so that she is saved or they don't show her death at all.

What you'll find is that virtually no women ever get killed on screen. Try it out...it actually is really blatant.

This has been observed for a long time. Go as far back as you want, you'll find examples. At the end of Superman II, Lois Lane punches Ursa to her apparent death. Superman wouldn't be able to do that, even though Ursa had been depicted killing (with glee) multiple people in that film.

You'll notice that screenwriters and directors sometimes need to do creative, contorted things to reconcile the "we love our kickass females" with "our kickass females can't get seriously hurt." In the cinematic atrocity Alien Vs. Predator, this was taken to a ridiculous extreme. There, you had a lightweight flimsy little model-chick with no fighting experience and celery stalks for bones who is apparently capable of getting a high-five from the Predator alien after slaughtering xenomorphs, their acid-blood splattering everyplace except onto her.

So we can't have our ass-kicking heroines get bruised or bloodied. Oh no no no.

I invite you to watch the disaster movie San Andreas. In it, the makers had to do something extremely creative. Basically, they wanted to have the daughter in the film be an ass-kicking female heroine who repeatedly rescues the fellow who turns into her love interest, an apparent overturning of that loathsome "weak damsel in distress" trope (booo! Hiss!). But, unfortunately, the love interest dude would simply end-up looking goddamned useless and pathetic by the end if that were the case-- which is why the roles can't just be inverted! A female isn't going to fall for a love interest she has to rescue. So they did three things for him to make him redeemable: first, they gave him a British accent (which sounds upper-class and well-educated to American audiences; a proxy for him having wealth and social status) and second, they gave him an adorable little brother who could be comic relief and be someone the older brother could be heroic for. Third: they created a villainous foil for him to look good against, a pathetic older sniveling jerk of a man who ended-up abandoning the daughter and selfishly saving his own skin in her time of need (the only such villain in the movie), so the fine British chap was able to jump-in and save her. So they had to work hard to not make him out to be a kind of useless damsel-like weakling. It's very inventive what they did in that case.

Well, to be honest I laff really hard when I see men hit women on TV now. I'm so sick of the portrayal of accepting violence by women against men, that I start yelling the worst profanities when I see a woman get decked by a man.

no more with political correctness if I'm not at work. If I'm watching TV with women about, I say it anyway. I just love seeing women get beaten by men on TV and movies now. I didn't used to. But I do now.
