Excellent analysis. Google actively undermining its core value proposition, search, because of activism.

It's no secret that Google frequently messes with the search results depending on what you look for. Very often depending on the topic you'll get very left leaning news sites for example bumped up to the top of the page.

This is something that Milo Yiannopoulos has investigated in a quite detailed way, I've done my own investigating into this because i was getting extremely annoyed by google's search results and I couldn't figure out why.

If you search for a keyword like "Brexit" in the google search engine, it constantly brings up Guardian and BBC spam articles, they're not even necessarily 'news' articles, but opinion pieces. However oddly enough, when you go to Bing, there's a much wider variety of news sources available.

For anybody who wants to look at multiple perspectives and have an honest research of a subject, this is utterly infuriating as it means Google really is fucking with the results and trying to filter out different perspectives on certain political topics.

They are literally trying to re-write history at times and it's disturbing to see, in fact, I think I may well make Bing my homepage, long overdue and it seems to be somewhat usable now compared to what it was like before.

That's the problem with Bing, its quality does not come close to Google's. When it comes to non-political stuff, i get much, much more appropriate results from Google. But when it comes to political stuff, Bing is better. As i pointed out earlier...

Recently someone did a satirical book on Islam. I googled it, and all i got on the front page was articles about the book. I Bing-ed it, and there at the top of the first page was a link to the site where you could buy the thing.

Yeah, it's a shame really, there's a pretty big opportunity out there for someone to develop better services than google without all of the political shite going on.

Silicon valley needs to get a kick in the vagina.

No. Not unless they have the same resources to spy on their customers as them and willingness to report any dissent to the government.

Try duckduckgo.com. It's usually pretty similar to Google quality. If you really can't find something, then you can resort to Google.

[–]ponybau5 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I find google loves putting results that are missing words in front. I searched for all the words, not ones you decided to trash.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And in return for peddling lies and poison the government demands Google provide them with personal data on every citizen using their search engine.

Quid pro quo.

Fucked up, isn't it?

[–]UNLIKELYME 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Google has an editorial policy that is enforced by Search quality and Spam teams. Furthermore they have over 10 000 outsiders who rank searches.

Yet it could be, in this case, that the Googles algorithm ranks certain MRA articles lower because they have so few "good" sites linking to them. The Feminist articles, on the other hand, have "authoritative" mainstream media outlets, governments, big organizations etc linking to them. That puts them higher in the results.

That's how Google mostly work even nowadays, particularly if there's no information in the browser's cache (as was the case here) or if the user isn't logged in (which probably was the case here).

[–]Rethgil 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Google admits they rank results lower that use certain terms it calls "negative". And it has already admitted it claissifys men's rights groups as hate groups.

I don't have a link or anything but I remember during the election when Trump criticized Elizabeth Warren for lying about her native american heritage, Google's autocomplete removed search resultes for "Elizabeth Warren Native American." Google does change their search results to push a narrative and given their feminist support it wouldn't surprise me if they are changing their results to be anti-MRA.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I Bing-ed it, and there at the top of the first page was a link to the site where you could buy the thing. It's almost as if Google doesn't want people buying books they don't agree with...

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not so sure. There are probably more blogs that are pro feminism and anti-MRA.

[–]Pz5[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

U have a point. However, if a user searches for site pertaining to rocks, then google should list only sites relating to rocks. Similarly, if the user searches for a men's rights blog then google should only list men's rights blogs. Google isnt doing this.

[–]OnePunchSnowman 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Couldn't this also be attributed to the fact that more people are pro women's rights and anti MRA?

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I appreciate the idea of creating debate with such a question, but seriously why is it being asked? Its established Google demotes MRA sites and results. Its known.

The other day I looked for an update on Damore and realised I probably shouldn't use Google to search for it. Used bing instead, got many more results.
