As someone who carries a gun, I wouldn't have even stepped in at first. Avoiding unnecessary violence is far and away the most effective way to say safe. That store has insurance and even if they didn't I care about my well-being way more than anything he had in his hands. The police exist for a reason and can search for him. The cashier can get fucked, she clearly cared about her life more than the beer so why not yours?

This is just me but I would quite happily tell a cunt like that what I really thought of her if she was going to give somebody completely untrained crap about not taking on somebody armed with a knife. Even if you have training in martial arts, it's a very dangerous idea to try and take somebody on with a knife, any number of things can go wrong and you could make your situation a hell of a lot worse than if you just let them get away. You made the right choice if you didn't know how to fight, don't let her try and shame you.

If you see her and she gives you attitude again, just tell her to fuck off.

I would have insisted that the manager at least send her home without pay for the rest of the day for her sexist comment. I would have tried to get her fired, ideally.

Thanks to all for your kind words. A few words of my owb: It all happened in seconds - in the way these things, I guess, tend to happen. What made me want to to step in was, I guess, that cashier was a woman and the instinct is to help a damsel in distress. Probably the fact that my wife stood next to me had something to do with it, too, though I realized almost immediately that she was in no danger.

I talked to the policemen who came there to investigate and they said that I did the right thing by backing down. But, then again, I knew that already.

My wife said, of course, that I did the right thing too. But who knows about women, what they feel deep down. That looks unfair, now when I look what I wrote, but that was something I thought about, so, I won't delete it.

Hopefully I'll be wiser the next time. I could have, after all open the door for them (there were two guys, what I didn't know at the time): goodbye, sir. But these things are almost like reflexes. So, who knows ...

My advice is to think these things through before they happen: what am I going to do? I'll try not to help a stranger even if she was a lady, unless it's something reasonably safe. I think. But I'm not sure if that's going to happen.
