Dear Mr Freelander,
Some time ago you and I spoke for some time on the phone about financial abortion. At the time, I asked you if you thought it was fair for a potential father to be given the option of opting out of all parental and financial obligations if one of his sexual partners was to become pregnant.
At the time I made the point that women are given every right and opportunity to opt out of parenting in the case of an unwanted pregnancy, whereas men are given none. In fact, at that point the man has no say in the future of the pregnancy and whether or not he is happy to become emotionally and at a minimum financially obligated for the next 18 years.
The view you expressed to me over the phone was that you believed it is the mans responsibility.
I kindly ask that you read the following article. Mostly because I believe it articulates my viewpoint a lot better than I am able.
http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-04/financial-abortion-men-opt-out-parenthood/8049576?pfmredir=sm
After you've had time to read it I would like very much to know if you can agree to the concept and rationale of a financial abortion, and whether you would be willing to raise this as an issue of national attention.
I am of the firm belief that this issue is a striking example of gender-based inequality in this country, and furthermore, would be on benefit to the nation in regards to unwelcome children and insecure family environments.
Regards, My details that I'll keep to myself
For some history; I did indeed talk to my member of parliament about this on the phone. I believe he outright struggled to accept the argument is sound and true and fair. As in, the old standard of it being a mans responsibility was so ingrained in this old sod, that he could not shake it, even when he verbally accepted the logic of my argument.
