Huge tl;dr but this was my Facebook response to a similar headline a woman I know posted there about the 800% increase in female prisoners over the last 30 years in the US. Many defriends as usual. :-)

Somebody posted this article and I had a little too much to say about it over there so now you can ignore it here.

Where to start. First off I'm 100% for both prison reform and the elimination of mandatory sentencing. The only problem I have is how this FAMM organization is so delusionally feminist that they can take institutions like the prison and criminal justice systems—where the gender bias is overwhelmingly anti-male—and turn them into places of unique female suffering.

There were 1,561,500 total US prisoners in 2014. Women make up about 7% of that population so that's roughly 1,452,195 men and 109,305 women. The stats between federal and state prisons are smeared together there and 2014 is the most recent number I can find. If I take the liberty of applying the 800% scare statistic, that means 95,642 more female prisoners than 30 years ago. In the same timeframe the male prison population grew by 1,103,110 prisoners. Over ten times more.

As for HIV rates and whether or not one has children, among US prisoners both of those percentages are near gender parity. Yet somehow those percentages only seem to matter when women are the ones suffering, despite the fact that they are only about 7% of the people in prison with AIDS or without their kids. Also, that 73% vs. 55% mental health disparity the article mentions? In real numbers that disadvantage becomes 798,707 mentally ill men behind bars and only 79,793 women so affected. Of course being only 10% of those who suffer from a particular problem that means that at least 90% of the caring and funding to fight that problem should go to women. Because, as they wrote in the article: "...it was something else (meaning the 30-year 800% increase) she told the crowd a few minutes later that got attendees worked up." Both men and women clearly care more about what happens to women in our society. Theories about patriarchy and rape culture become more difficult to believe in once that becomes clear.

Men do go to prison more often for violent crimes (around half of male vs. a third of female inmates) but that always raises the question of how "just" the justice system really is when being female is such a staggering advantage for defendants. Despite the endless claims of exceptional female suffering here is a study that shows exactly that hidden advantage.

Feminists often dismiss any complaints against the bias of the courts with, "Tough shit, women commit less crime," and that's statistically true. But what about the well-documented racial biases of our criminal justice system? Don't conservatives dismiss those with the same statistically true argument of, "Whites commit less crime"?

The whole thing reminds me of the Violence Against Women Act. I mean how could one be against the Violence Against Women Act, right? It takes a very patient person to wade through the real data behind all of these issues and proposals to fix them. In VAWA's case, that cleverly-named law supplanted existing anti-DV law that was too weak but more gender neutral. Even the ACLU was against VAWA as it was written, the DNA collection of the accused (not convicted) in particular but also the overall inegalitarian gender thrust of of it. Because feminists believe as the director of the Feminist Majority Foundation and editor of Ms. Magazine, Katherine Spillar does. She said of domestic violence: "Well, that's just a clean-up word for wife-beating," and went on to add that regarding male victims of dating violence, "we know it's not girls beating up boys, it's boys beating up girls."

That coincides with the 93% male prison population.

51.2% of male inmates are fathers and 61.7% of female inmates are mothers. Women may have a slightly higher rater, but in absolute numbers, it's not even close, as /u/ISOanexplanation pointed out.

Women, of course, won't end up in the prison as easily as men. And if they do, they'll get shorter sentences and end up in better places (though lesbian rapes are much more common in prisons than what we are led to believe by the feminist narrative that don't want to see women as rapists).

And then they get sympathy. Most women claim that they didn't do anything wrong and even if they did it was because a man, an abusive father, a manipulative boyfriend etc.

And we want so much to believe it.

But as a Finnish prison psychiatrist said: "female inmates lie even more than male inmates because they know they can get benefits from their lies".
