Totally illegal. This is direct discrimination under the 2010 Equality Act. Go to ACAS.

Sex discrimination

The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against employees because of their sex.

Sex discrimination against men is just as unlawful as sex discrimination against women. Also, it is unlawful for a woman to discriminate against another woman because of her sex, and for a man to discriminate against another man because of his sex.

Step 2: Go to the manager and ask to hand over your application.

Step 3: If you are rejected because of your gender, sue.

You can only hire one gender if your business requires it. A women's only gym has a legal right to say women only. I think many businesses say their business requires it but it doesn't really. A coffee shop can do just as fine hiring a man or a woman.

Depends on the laws in your area. It's probably against the law to refuse to hire someone based on gender. So if a male applies and is turned away because of his gender, it's discrimination.

It's against the law in England and Wales under the Equality Act 2010.

Although that very law also has a section in it about "Positive action", so they'd maybe be staffed mostly by men. In that case, it's strangely legal.

Well it's the UK so...probably perfectly legal what with their completely ass backwards law system of late. Pretty soon if you're a white male you'll need to carry around legal papers to show every single feminist investigator for your authorization to exist due to all that toxic masculinity you spew on everyone.

Illegal in the US. Some states allow you to look specifically for women, but you can't say it's what you're doing.

In the US I know that most (if not all) restaurants akin to hooters hire actresses, not servers. That way they can say outright that you are too fat and/or ugly to work there.

4 The protected characteristics
The following characteristics are protected characteristics — sex

Sex
In relation to the protected characteristic of sex —
__(a) a reference to a person who has a particular protected characteristic is a reference to a man or to a woman;
__(b) a reference to persons who share a protected characteristic is a reference to persons of the same sex.
13 Direct discrimination
__(1) A person (A) discriminates against another (B) if, because of a protected characteristic, A treats B less favourably than A treats or would treat others.
19 Indirect discrimination
__(1) A person (A) discriminates against another (B) if A applies to B a provision, criterion or practice which is discriminatory in relation to a relevant protected characteristic of B's.
__(2)For the purposes of subsection (1), a provision, criterion or practice is discriminatory in relation to a relevant protected characteristic of B's if —
____(a) A applies, or would apply, it to persons with whom B does not share the characteristic,
____(b) it puts, or would put, persons with whom B shares the characteristic at a particular disadvantage when compared with persons with whom B does not share it,
____(c) it puts, or would put, B at that disadvantage, and
____(d) A cannot show it to be a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.
