18,000 people applied. 12 were selected as ASCANs: 7 men and 5 women.

Now, I could be wrong, and NASA hasn't said, but I find it very curious to find such a close split because I would bet that the male:female ratio in the applicant pool looks verrrrry different. It's almost as if... well.. maybe there was some shenanigans going on that resulted in the selection of women because they were women.

But surely NASA would never do that, right?

(tbh maybe I am just jealous that they didn't pick me!)
