Who else here were taught that women are romantic creatures who seek a spiritual connection, and how did the truth not reach us by age 10?

I was told that by everyone, but I learned the truth about women at around the age of 8 between my mother and her female friends who would sexually abuse me (and at least a few other boys, that I knew of) and make videos of it for their own pleasure and amusement

So, pretty early on I discovered the idea that female sexuality and affection is inherently tied to romantic feelings and emotional intimacy was a load of bullshit. Evidently nothing these women did with me or the other boys had anything to do with love or romance

Sadly, a lot of people still have this ludicrous notion, which leads to, no matter what a woman does, people interpreting it as her having virtuous intentions

The worst part is that women themselves believe this. They never question how romantic notions are completely female-directed ("A man doing something for a woman is always a good thing!") and that their attraction to a man's "personality" is more about his potential to make money. Something that really shows this is female romantic movies/books. The male love interest must always have lots of money AND be a worshiping slave to her (as Pixar demonstrated with a 12 year old girl dream boyfriend: "I would die for you Riley."), whereas you don't find those qualities in male movies with female love interests.

I mean one of the most important moments for me was realizing that women were people too.

They were just as confused, upset, happy and unhappy, and sexual (to a smaller extent) than most men.

The reason I was taught to view them as ubermenche angels I will never know.

Never hit a girl, even if she is pounding your head in because she is just better, right?

Oh, the "sugar and spice and everything nice" line was driven home hard in my youth. It wasn't even from my family, it was just the media I was surrounded by. Oprah was the more important talkshow because she was a woman, the women characters were never sent on the dangerous recon missions in the action cartoons, and show after show had men just stumbling over themselves to lay presents and flowers at girls' feet in an attempt to marry them (remember, these were cartoons and I was a kid. Nobody fucked.)

I don't think "the truth" really hit me until Jr. High. Everyone had been pretty equal in grade school; all of the sports were co-ed, boys and girls would both take leadership roles, and there wasn't a lot of extra space in the cafeteria so everyone sat at just a few tables.

But then Jr. High happened.

A looser dress code, a bigger cafeteria, people picking their own groups... Frankly, everyone seemed a little more mean with greater freedom to discriminate; but the girls in particular seemed to head off into their own little world. Traveling in groups, sitting together and excluding others, eagerly choosing boy vs girl sports in PE... The equality of gradeschool transformed into 'grrl power' in Jr. High, and the girls I had been friends with in the past now had other things to do than be friends with boys. I understand hormones and puberty, but the majority of teenage girls I had once been friendly enough with were now firmly in the 'boys are for boyfriends' camp.

And just like that, the great myth that had been built up over the years slipped out the window. The notion that women were more compassionate, more emotionally sensitive, more loving... Nope! No, the majority of interactions in Jr. High proved that to be untrue. Women are just as shitty as men.

I don't think I've ever met a woman with any interest in romantic tropes or spiritual connections. Those just seem like Hollywood lies now, like the same newspaper in multiple films or 555 phone numbers.

It's very disappointing, because that's all I ever wanted as a young man. Now I'm a middle aged man, and I've still never had a deep, meaningful relationship; kind of given up on the premise, to be honest.

I was. "Don't worry, in high school girls will be interested in smart, sensitive boys!". Then "Don't worry, in college girls will be interested in smart, sensitive boys!". Then "Don't worry, once they graduate collge women will be interested in smart, sensitive men!"

Yeah that old pile of shit. Worked out early on that women's idea of "romance" is a man doing everything for them and them never doing anything for the man. Obviously the truth is that men are the romantic sex, and that romance is a fairly unpleasant power relationship / Stockholm syndrome with men as the victim of it.

Another piece of crap we were sold growing up is that women are more in tune with people's emotions. Their own emotions more like and those of other women, but as they have more power what need do women have of understanding men? Instead you get women complaining that men don't do everything they command even when they fail to express their desires. This shows that men, not women are the sex that tries to understand the other.
