So if the women does the same thing it's not rape?

[–]Lethn 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is really annoying, I want to believe this woman, but the mere fact that this is posted on the Guardian and she is a Labour MP makes me question everything she says.

I hope feminists realise that even if this woman's experiences were completely legitimate they have eroded a huge amount of trust that the public used to place in rape victims who came forward. As you say, just from this one line she spoke "A rape happens when a man' yeah, why just a man?

This is another one of those fucking times where regardless of this woman's experience it doesn't magically justify acting as if roughly half the population of the entire planet should be regarded as potential rapists. The way she's talking about this if we analyse it "To hurt someone he feels he can control" makes it out like any man who wants to 'control' a woman is going to automatically try and rape her at some point.

The anti-capitalist and regressive left is very good at this sort of thing, they make these sorts of emotional arguments to gain support on either side of the political compass and to make it look like anybody against them is some kind of women-hating, poor bashing, neo-nazi, paedophile monstrosity while hiding their true intentions in the bills they want to pass or what message they want to send to their political opponents.

Also, glancing over the Guardian page, looks like this is no coincidence since it's a commons debate and the feminists are out in force posting their propaganda all over the page, Jessica Valenti's fucking around as expected.

We can't stop rape if we prize men's reputations over women's safety

When women do that, "makes a decision to hurt someone [she] feels [she] can control", it's called government.

[–]kutuup1989 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Under British law, no.

Sadly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What the actual fuck...

[–]kutuup1989 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know.

In British law, rape can only be committed by a man.

If a woman rapes a man, it's the lesser charge of sexual assault.

[–]double-happiness 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

rape can only be committed by a man

That's almost, but not exactly correct. It would be more true to say that 'in English law, rape can only be done with a penis'. If woman A is deemed culpable in a situation where man B forcibly penetrated woman C, woman A can actually be tried and convicted of raping woman C with man B's penis.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/march/16/newsid_2521000/2521053.stm

However, for practical purposes, your statment is broadly correct. The case I have linked above is certainly an 'outlier'. I'm just making the techical point that it is really the penis that is the important feature of rape in E&W law, not the fact of being a man.

There's been two official government petitions. Not sure if the second got enough signatures, but the govt said "Too bad so sad" to the first one.

Women use sex to control men. So they think that men rape women to "control" them.

[–]Imnotmrabut 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is quite a valid point. As A G.A.Y. Guy, I have not encountered any guys who use sex as a control issue or mechanism. Frankly it's just too easy to go and find it else where.

However, I've encountered far too many women who have tried to control me by Sex, even when they know I'm G.A.Y., as it does seem a default course of action, biologically hard wired.

Why are you making gay an abbreviation?

[–]Imnotmrabut 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good As You.

[–]xNOM 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly... As usual there's no actual substance to this repeated claim. It's childish projection psychology. Control is the reason that WOMEN rape. Teenage students, etc.

It's There in Hansard -08 December 2016 Volume 618, Col 409.

What I find most interesting to read it in it's full context and hoe she links what she says to Rape Myths;

"As an adult, of course I now know that rape is not about sex at all—it is all about power and control, and it is a crime of violence. I still pick up on when the myths of rape are perpetuated formsic a male perspective: “Surely you could have fought him off. Did you scream loudly enough?” And the suggestion by some men that a woman is giving subtle hints or is making it up is outrageous. Those assumptions put the woman at the heart of cause, when she should be at the heart of effect. A rape happens when a man makes a decision to hurt someone he feels he can control. Rapes happen because of the rapist, not because of the victim."

She implies that only "MEN" are the ones who use rape Myths, never women - showing that her words are riddles with Misandry and Blatant Sexism. This is the Mythology of Rape Culture embedded in UK Politics and no different to "All Men Are Rapists" legitimized by Parliamentary Privilege.

It is interesting that she mention she is married, but goes on to say;

"We women in our society have to stand up for each other. We have to be courageous. We have to call things out and say where things are wrong. We have to support and nurture our sisters as we do with our sons. Like many women of my age, I have on occasion encountered other aggressive actions towards me, both in business and in politics. But one thing that I realise now is that I am not scared and he was"

So, like many she indicates she see's her husband as lesser than a child, because of course, whilst she apparently abhors myths and stereotypes .... no one in parliament pointed out her sexist and biased cliches.

I wonder if the quality of parliamentary debate and rhetoric would improve if people got to vote Hansard Up And Down!

So when I got sexually assaulted by a female I made the decision not the person who did it to me hmm interesting.

[–]BDMR_lurker 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good thing these people don't make laws...

[–]Funcuz 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

For years I'd fought an uphill battle trying to convince so many people that most of the time a cigar was just a cigar. At least some people are starting to come around and see that, yes, actually, men who rape women do it because they want to put their dick into a woman. It's that simple.

I'm not sure why people actually believe rape has anything to do with control. It's exactly what it looks like : Man gets an urge, finds a woman to unwillingly satisfy it.

I think it's because too many women don't appreciate what the male sex drive actually feels like. They don't think of it as equivalent to hunger or thirst so they can't understand any other reason a man would rape a woman. I guess that's what happens when you only ask other women what men think of anything. Which, now that I think of it, describes an awful lot of female thinking regarding men.

[–]PaisleyBowtie 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's become the narrative because it fits into the Duluth model, which is a huge justification for the validity of patriarchy theory

[–]bakedpotato486 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Could be narcissism. He raped her not to fulfill his own needs, but to take or control her agency.

Something important to note is that Michelle Thomson is an Independent MP, not becasue she wanted to leave her party the SNP, but becasue her property dealings are being investigated by police:

So a man who makes a decision to hurt someone he can control MUST be a rapist yeah? No sweeite. Sorry for what happened to you but it doesn't give you the right to make sweeping judgements on all men and tar them with the same brush. That's just not acceptable. A rape happens when a sick man or woman does a very sick thing. Please leave out the 10 cent psychoanalysing. For everybody's sake.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm glad I don't live in the UK. Rape persecution is so bad over there already...if it get's any worse you will have something comparable to Stalinism.
