Imagine if we started a movement called #malelivesmatter to challenge the accepted norm that men constitute 80% of suicides, 99% of combat deaths, and another disproportionate amount of violent crime victims. We'd be ridiculed and labelled as sexist.

Thing is, this is a legit issue that should be talked about by everyone. Men need to talk about their depression just as much as women, and yet society pressures men into not showing or talking about feelings because it's "unmanly." Just as feminists try to fight the expectations of their gender, men should be able to fight the expectations of theirs equally.

Anyone who would consider this anti feminist or a hate crime is as dense as a concrete block.

"Approximately 80%" would have been better. "Almost" is soft speech that people will subconsciously dismiss, especially if the statement is in opposition to their ideological presumptions.

A common feminist talking point here is that women "attempt" suicide 4x more often so it's really women who are worse off and being ignored by society.

If you point out that a man actually dying might matter more than a woman crying for help (and it's generally help, not attention, that people are crying for but to be fair, attention whores do exist and in other cases, sometimes people just don't realize their method isn't that lethal). These people will just argue that women are suffering just as much but don't die due to choosing less lethal means, oblivious to the fact that lethality of means correlates highly with lethality of intent. Suicide attempts without intent to die are not considered attempts but "suicide gestures" by clinicians who study and/or work with people who are suicidal.

The women who do choose lethal means are just as determined to die as the guys who choose those means, and the men who choose non-lethal means are just as likely to be communicating distress unsure as the women who do and just as likely to be using it as a means of communicating .... it just happens that women are more likely to use it as a means of communication so their problems can be addressed, whereas men are more likely to choose lethal means because they actually want to die.

As far as I remember this statistic is a result of different methods. Both men and women usually have an equal rate of suicide attempts, men are just usually more successful because they're more likely to use methods with a much higher chance of working (guns, hanging etc.) while women are more likely to use methods such as overdose which are more susceptible to intervention, and are less likely to work even if no one intervenes.

So it's not the case that men are more likely to try and take there lives for various social reasons.
