He has no self defense argument here. Self defense ends when you stop your attacker from attacking you. He doesn't attack until after she's stopped. That's retaliation.

They're both guilty of assault and battery. Depending on the nature of her injuries, he may have committed aggravated assault. And of course, the attack on the witness is completely unjustified.

Only he is likely to be charged, due to the outcome (not gender. If their positions were reversed - he was slapping her around and then she beat the shit out of him and attacked a witness after they'd apparently reconciled - I doubt he'd be charged, too.) He should have limited himself to stopping her attack. Anything beyond that ceases to be self defense. If he'd done that, she'd be the one facing charges.

This probably isn't the first time they've beat the shit out of each other, either. Half of all interpersonal violence is reciprocal.

This is obviously just a violent couple. She hit him numerous time and he never walks away. After he knocks her down she gets up and doesn't run away. Clearly, this is their norm...

Both of these people are horribly in the wrong. She clearly thinks it is okay to abuse him. She hit (punching and kicking, but not counting the shoves or ear grab) him 20 times by my count before going to the driver's side of the car, and then she hits him again after that before they embrace and then he just goes off on her. What he did was pretty brutal, though, and that's not self-defense. He never tried to walk away when he easily could've, and then when he chases after that other woman he's clearly in the wrong. There's no way in hell I'm going to defend this guy and say what he did is okay.

Having said that, the article is clearly trying to vilify him and excuse here. Here's the most telling part:

There's no reason to say that the man is larger unless you are trying to minimize what she did to him. Also take into consideration that we don't see what started all of this, and another weird thing is that she tried to get into the driver's side of the car after the initial hits, he stopped her, and then after he punches her he puts her in the passenger side of the car. So who's car is it and who is supposed to be driving? Anyways, they are both way in the wrong.

I happened to really like this, and the fact that it was upvoted strongly, from the daily mail comments:

She assaulted him 21 times before he retaliated and yet the headline is Man repeatedly punches woman in the face.....it beggars belief how one sided domestic violence is reported.
