Of course feminists hate anything that women find attractive in a man, this actually explains everything.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They also hate anything that men find attractive in a woman.

[–]Paladin327 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, they love the things men fond attractive in a woman because it's empowering. They don't like that men like these things in women

Like an over the shoulder pose in a video game

[–]Alkomb 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. Couldn't have said that better, myself.

[–]bertreapot 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It could be that a lot of hardcore feminists were drawn to the movement because men aren't attracted to them and they are bitter. So, they're angry at things that make men men, and they're angry at women who attract men. They only associate with other women who also hate men, and all they do is gripe about how horrible men are.

Fucking biology. Always disrupting the narrative.

heaven forbid i dont want to sit on my testicles, or reach down to hoist them onto my lap. heaven forbid i sit in an anatomically COMFORTABLE position.

[–]bertreapot 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I tend to go with the theory that men keep their legs spread proportionate to the width of their shoulders. It is nature's way of reserving space proportionate to our size.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

that and most public seating is built these days to accomodate women. ever notice that if you sit down with your feet & Knees together, the backs of your legs are off of the chair by about 2-3 inches? its because the average male height is about 5'11, but the chairs are built to seat people 5'5

[–]redditorriot 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Weird, I'd never considered this as a sex shaming tactic.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The researcher believes that these postures may appear more attractive to females due to dominance correlating with success and openness meaning a more 'easy-to-read' character.

This doesn't make sense. The researcher's study found that open posture was more attractive to both men and women. Yet she is somehow trying to correlate male dominance into the reasoning for the attraction? At least in this article, they make brief mention, but don't discuss at all the fact that men also found women more attractive when they "manspread."

[–]redditorriot 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Dominance seems possible I guess. Seems weird to overlook the fact that it suggests genitals! in both sexes.

[–]SaiHottari 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

From an evo-psych perspective it makes sense that an air of dominance would be a commonly attractive feature in a male by females. However, this doesn't quite prove that. Another perspective that accounts for male attraction to open posing females is the fact that many people like following the path of least resistance. An open posture suggests easy to read people, as though they aren't hiding something. In speed dating you want to be able to read someone accurately in a short time frame. It may also suggest a casual or laid back personality which I think many people find attractive.

I feel like this is what would attract me to a woman with open posture. It is inviting, in a not sexual way. No one likes crossed arms either because it suggests that one is closed off.

[–]questionnmark 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It could be partially due to 'control of space' around yourself. If you make yourself seem smaller that is a submissive posture; whereas if you take up more space that is a dominant posture.

With females it could be due to receptivity. A female with open legs could be seen as 'more receptive' than a female with closed legs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's where the problem comes in. You can't completely change the reasoning for the attraction based on the sex, when it is the same action being performed. I honestly think it has more to do with simply being relaxed and comfortable, which is attractive for obvious reasons. No reason to make a stretch here.

fair enough

I definitely like (in the sexual way, and also in the platonic way) assertive and confident men. I fucking LOATHE anybody who shoves their leg into my seat space on public transit. It's almost like your body language on your dating profile and your body language on a crowded train should different...

You'll notice that I said "people," not men. I just think the premise of this article is shit - taking up too much space on public transit is not the same thing as standing like like Tony Stark in your dating profile pic.

"Womyn?"

The article conflates the way confident men arrange themselves in their dating profile pictures with the way assholes sit on crowded trains. It's a ridiculous premise. Context matters.

Did you read the article? The author makes a comparison that ignores context. Dating profile pics and crowded trains are wildly different situations.

Strawman

[–]chavelah 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

How so?

[–]hackableyou -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You have distorted what manspreading is. While a man spreading his legs can be shoving their leg into your seat space, that is not always the case. Most of the men who were interviewed in those feminist videos had no one sitting next to them.

[–]chavelah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I fully agree that if there is no shortage of space on the train, taking more than one seat is not rude no matter how you do it - with your legs, your purse, your big fat ass, whatever. My objection to this article is the idea that because women prefer men who strike certain poses in their pictures on match.com, we also prefer guys who take up a lot of space on the subway, the sidewalk, etc. Context is key.

[–]hackableyou 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But what I am saying is that you are making the claim the taking up space on the sidewalk or subway usually entails getting in your space. While this is the case sometimes, usually men are considerate of those around them. Men move aside to let women pass (as do women to men), and men offer seats to women. It is a strawman to distort this by saying most of the times they are shoving their leg on your seat, then begin to proceed while the article is wrong and attack this distorted version.

I am telling you this with all due respect. I am not trying to argue with you or attack you.

[–]chavelah 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think we're just misunderstanding each other. My reaction to the thread title "Women like manspreaders. Too bad feminists." was "Bullshit, we fucking hate manspreaders." I read the article and discover that the journalist has drawn a false equivalence between the kind of pictures women like in dating profiles (Tony Stark stance, very attractive) and the way they like men to position themselves on public transit (where anybody doing Tony Stark stance is being a fucking asshole if that means they are unecessarily touching other people).

I'm not saying that men usually do this, just that it's not attractive when it happens.

The top comments on this thread are mind-bogglingly stupid. I would hate for somebody to read them and conclude that spreading your legs on the subway or taking up lots of space in other crowded situations is a way to get positive attention from women, based on the fact that we like assertive poses on dating website pictures where the guy is standing all by himself in front of a vista. In real life, sprawling yoir bidy out in public is either a neutral act because you are in a sparsely occupied place and nobody gives a fuck how you position yourself, or it's the contemptible act of somebody who thinks they are a special snowflake who is entitled to their own space and part of their neighbor's.

[–]hackableyou 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh okay. That makes sense. You don't find manspreading unattractive, you find the inconsiderate manspreading of getting into other's space on the subway etc unattractive. Right?

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Right, except when you are standing in an open space, it's not "manspreading." It's just standing like Tony Stark.

[–]hackableyou 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you are sitting on the subway with nobody on your left or right, and your legs are open, it is manspreading according to the feminist video. I think the measured people with nobody next to them at 8 inches from knee to knee and called it manspreading. I am assuming you are not against this form of manspreading.

Yes, in a park I don't think that is manspreading.
