So the story begins at our University program at the start of a new program

I met this guy (we will call Jack) at the beginning of the semester, we got along fine and formed a group inside that program.

There was also another group of girls who formed as well in the program. One of the girls seemed to be into Jack (we will call her Mary)

So half way through the semester after some friendly talking Jack goes up to our group and asks us if he should get closer to Mary. We think a relationship is a nice thing to have and we all want Jack to have a good relationship with Mary. Jack is a nice guy he always was kind and helped out when he could we wanted the best for him.

We urge him to go for it before we head off for our weekends.

Half way into the weekend Jack notifies us on Facebook what went down.

Apparently, Mary thought Jack was a homosexual and recognized him as "the fun gay buddy"

Needless to say we were all floored because they got along so damn nicely during breaks.

Anyways throughout the semester she and her group of friends would loudly refer to Jack as her gay buddy, always saying that he would do this or that like a gay man.

We honestly didn't know if she was joking or not.

Now don't get us wrong, we had nothing against homosexuals, its just that we are straight and we don't like to be falsely labelled.

Anyways Jack asks me to have a good serious talk to Mary and tell that he isn't gay nor is the rest of the group. And that if she was joking, to please ask her to stop, that it wasn't very fair to him.

So I went up to her after break and slowly and seriously talked it out.

She was however still insisted that she really thought Jack was gay, and that it was "ok to be gay", laughing about it and brushing it off like it was nothing.

So I went back to Jack and told her that she was being serious. So he just cut the relationship attempt off with her.

We were still of course friends with each other, but Jack wouldn't be spending as much time with her after classes or during breaks anymore. He spent it with us talking about w.e.

So now to the near present, We are nearly finished with some mid terms and Jack one day gets pulled aside by Mary and her group of friends.

He came back pretty upset.

Apparently, Mary actually was pretty into him and was joking about him being gay (despite everything me and Jack did to try to clarify what she actually thought about us)

And when Jack stopped hanging out with Mary as much she got upset. She and her friends said that Jack should have realized that she was joking

They then demanded that Jack apologize to Mary for not understanding that she was joking about him being gay and for stopping his pursuit of Mary. All while calling him a dumbass

What the actual fuck

Tl;Dr: Friend was called homosexual by the girl he was trying to get closer to.

After seriously trying to get her to understand (and failing) he backs off and comes hang out with us more often again.

The girl then gets upset at my friend and demands an apology from him for not understanding that she was just joking about his sexuality and still pursuing her
