Excellent comment from that link:

After some time I managed to find the abstract online - big shout out to the Independent for reporting on a study in their own words without actually sharing the research. Way to buck the trend of bad science reporting, guys.

Turns out the study was actually investigating the effects of 'psychological distance' on our judgments about other people - that is, whether the tangibility and immediacy of a person affects how we rate them. They weren't studying the interplay of intelligence and masculity whatsoever - the study was only 'about men' because, like good researchers, their data set controlled for confounding factors such as gender. Because the ACTUAL subject of the study seems generalised to all people, it'd be interesting to see if the same is true with the genders reversed. Perhaps we can even actually write a journal submission about it.

The paper, for those who want to learn, is titled "(Psychological) Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder", by Park, Young, and Eastwick. I look forward to reading the full text in November. Hopefully my poor masculinity (which, as I'm increasingly told by people who don't share my life experiences, is flimsier than an origami pole vault) can hold out until then.

Why would any man feel threatened by an intelligent woman?

The unintelligent women are the scary ones, and there are a lot more of them.

An intelligent woman doesn't need a man. She's responsible, she's self-sufficient, and she doesn't need feminism taking her agency and throwing it against a rock until it spells "victim".

Intelligent women, by definition, posses critical thought, and we need more of them.

Now sure, there are exceptions- and I'm sure our favorite little -ism has more than a handful of clever girls twisting strings, but even then- the terror lies in the hundreds of knife-wielding puppets they direct.

[–]Deansdale 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks to combative feminism many women out there now confuse intelligence with arrogance. They feel a constant urge to prove their amazing intellect by interrupting anything and anyone, getting offended when a man tries to tell them anything (you know, mansplaining), and by being hair-triggered argumentative freaks at all times. And they don't understand why men don't like to be around them - proving their IQ is not that high afterall.

What men usually prize in women is agreeableness. If that is paired with intelligence, that's all the better. But no amount of intellect can compensate for having a disagreeable personality.

And they don't understand why men don't like to be around them - proving their IQ is not that high afterall.

It's not just IQ. We all protect ourselves from rejection a bit by deflecting blame to external factors. It's much harder to say "I'm the problem" than it is to say "People have a problem with one of my positive traits."

I know this because women won't date me because I'm my life is too exciting (translation: get arrested a lot)

The whole "threatened by intelligent women" idea always sounded extremely suspect to me. There are some people who are intimidated by the intelligence of others, no doubt, but it never struck me as probable that there was an exclusively-gendered version of that, so widespread as to be noticable as a social phenomenon. Far more likely it's a sort of "sour grapes" thing: oh, he won't commit? He's just threatened by your intelligence! (or maybe he's just not that into you...)

Personally, I've found that intelligent women are more interesting to talk to.

[–]EvilPundit[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, me too. Unintelligent women are boring (as are unintelligent men, of course).

[–]fourthwallcrisis 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't have married a dummy, I'm sure most people here would agree.

[–]Ovendice 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

This is stupid. Just poll men and ask them if they feel 'threatened' by intelligent women- they won't lie to you. And btw, I've never been 'threatened' or 'intimidated' by an intelligent woman in my entire life. The absolute most intelligent women are still just average intelligence.

I talk to them all the time- some of the most intelligent women there are- female business owners, female doctors, attorneys female administrative staff, etc. in my line of work. And I've never once had one of them ever tell me anything interesting or original or 'bless' me with their great intellect or knowledge of anything.

I've learned more from just listening to male rednecks who actually taught me something of value instead of listening to mindless dribble about Feminist tainted thinking. And btw, a study came out years ago that showed that while it is less educated men who are abusive, it is more educated women who are more abusive. In other words it seems that women tend to use their intelligence to demean and emotionally abuse others. Sound familiar? It should- you've been witnessing it all your life.

Intelligent women aren't intelligent in the book sense (99.999% of the time), but they know exactly how to manipulate men and the situation around them. They know they are seen as weak even if they aren't. In that sense, with the legal system and every stranger on their side, they are terrifying. They know how to fuck you over and they've been trained to do that their entire lives. It's why after millions of discussions on the internet, not a single man has ever gotten through to a woman and the dialogue has never moved forward. It's not about that. It never was. Women always have an out.

Just some of the conversations I've had so far this month has included some fascinating stuff. One is a researcher whose team is working on a new way to halt the progress of Alzheimers, another is a grad student working on her PhD in astrophysics planning on doing her thesis on accretion disc formation following the birth of a new black hole. Of course, I'm a fan of science so things like new research is something I'm going to take an interest in.

Business owners, doctors, attorneys, all these people must surely have something interesting to say (especially attorneys, every lawyer I've met has had some real head-shaker "war stories" they love to tell). Maybe these women aren't saying anything that interests you, but there's plenty who are saying interesting things.

One is a researcher whose team is working on a new way to halt the progress of Alzheimers

Team. That is what you get so much of the time when these lists of so-called female inventors are forced on us, "She was part of a 'team' that discovered a new form of plastic." LOL Yea and she was probably making the coffee. When you've worked for as many companies as I have and dealt with as many people as I have working for other companies as clients, you know the pattern and who's who. 95% of women do NOTHING. That's including the women in any workplace as well.

"another is a grad student working on her PhD in astrophysics"

She's lying to you. Virtually all women lie or wildly exagerrate either what they do (unless you're working with them so now they can't lie) and what they studied in college. A woman I met on line told me she had a degree in engineering from MIT and later I found out she was the receptionist for an engineering firm answering the phone. Women almost always lie nowadays.

"Business owners, doctors, attorneys, all these people must surely have something interesting to say"

Only a tiny fraction of women are any of these things, Goofy. Let's get you up to speed- you're still drinking the Kool-Aid the mass media is shoving down your throat. YES, there ARE female attorneys and CEOs, but what they don't tell you is that is only a tiny, tiny percentage of women. Only 2% of CEOs are women. Shocking, huh? Look it up. Only 6% of CFOs, 5% of COOs, etc.

Most women, if they work at all, are working at some retail place ir in an office answering a phone. The number 1 job more women are in than any other is still secretary. Dept of Labor 20 Leading Occupations of Employed Women: http://www.dol.gov/wb/factsheets/20lead2010.htm

Never bothered to look, huh? And there is was all this time, hidden in plain sight.

I hate having to be the one who popped your bubble, but you've been getting a very distorted impression of what women are doing today. Most women just major in liberal arts fluff and graduate with trash degrees and 90% of the others only major in an extremely narrow range of occupations; nursing, low grade education and accounting. The more things change, the more they stay the same; Feminism failed and women achieved only one thing: A media mirage that they have accomplished something. That's what women do best, create and illusion with zero substance.

Plus 84% of women polled at Forbes stated they want to be housewives. http://www.forbes.com/sites/meghancasserly/2012/09/12/is-opting-out-the-new-american-dream-for-working-women/#7ed6d3143095 .. the ultimate proof Feminism failed and was an idiotic and stupid idea that should have died 30 years ago.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She's lying to you.

She really isn't. I've known her for years and I know the tale and seen the progress. Hate to pop your bubble.

And yes, most research is done as a part of a team. That's how most science is done.

Business owners may be relatively few, but you may want to check your stats as to how many women doctors and lawyers are out there. Also, just because someone's a secretary doesn't mean they can't also have interesting things to say.

I get that you're angry at women for some reason. I'm really not interested in your personal reasons why, but I am stating for the record that there's plenty of intelligent women out there and I personally think you're doing yourself a disservice if you walk through life predisposed against ~50% of the world's population.

Being pro-men doesn't mean you have to be anti-women.

She really isn't. I've known her for years and I know the tale and seen the progress. Hate to pop your bubble.

Yay! You know one female who is an astrophysicist. Your one anecdotal exception SO proves that women as a whole are accomplishing something. HAha Your odds of meeting another female astrophysicist? Literally one in million or more.

And yes, most research is done as a part of a team

Huh, I don't recall reading "Tesla was part of a team that invented AC current" or "Alexander Graham Bell was part of a team who invented the telephone." HAHAHA!! Sounds hilarious, doesn't it? That's because it's BULLSHIT.

but you may want to check your stats as to how many women doctors and lawyers are out there.

Women account for about 30% of the doctors in the U.S. but more than half of those are Eastern Indian and Asian immigrants and about 30% of attorneys are female, but only 4 percent of the 200 top U.S. law firms have female, firm-wide managing partners.

In other words, most women completely drop out of medicine and law after just a few years completely and stop working altogether, so all that college was a waste of time and expense, not to mention they most likely kept a man from being admitted in their stead at whatever school they went to. But that is another story.

I'm not angry with women, I'm angry with FRAUD. And this idea that women are 'taking over the world' and that they are accomplishing anything is complete bullshit. There's about 5% of women who will contribute and do something significant and that is it. This imbecilic habit people have nowadays to point at ONE female doing something and say, "SEE, women ARE doing something," is asinine and beyond retarded. I saw a 2 headed bear once in a museum so I can technically say, "There ARE 2 headed bears, you know!" Lol No one seems to be able to conceive of percentages or SCALE anymore.

And there has always been a 5% of women in any generation and century who have done something significant, that's always remained a constant, but the other 95% are only interested in gossip, shopping and eating and that's it. And I have nothing in common with someone like that at all.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

HAHAHA!! Sounds hilarious, doesn't it? That's because it's BULLSHIT.

Yes, because the boundaries of our knowledge a century ago haven't changed at all.

I'm sure there's just all sorts of discoveries being made in basements the world over though.

I'm not angry with women

You're clearly angry with many, and apparently entirely dismissive of the rest.

I talk to them all the time- some of the most intelligent women there are- female business owners, female doctors, attorneys female administrative staff, etc. in my line of work. And I've never once had one of them ever tell me anything interesting or original or 'bless' me with their great intellect or knowledge of anything.

K. You have fun with that.

Has anyone stopped to consider -- maybe men have good reason not to want to date or marry hostile, "intelligent" women.

Is it really in their best interest?

No but a lot of women (not just feminists) need that myth because allows them to feel some self righteous indignation and superiority.
