This quote is a gem:

“… as soon as you tell people you’re gay, they’ll tell you what you think,” he said. “Just from the fact that I’m gay, people assumed I endorsed all their positions about whatever.”

That's pretty much how it works...

What's needed is a strong independent anti-feminist and sane gay man. I'm not particularly pleased with Andrew Sullivan or Milo Yiannopoulos.

That's pretty much how it works…

Yup.

Try being a black conservative voter (in the UK anyway) or Labour voter that thinks Feminists have got it all ass-backwards …

Don’t know Andrew Sullivan; Milo’s hugely entertaining, but that kind of extreme cuts both ways. Could do with other voices.

It's really quite funny how shocked some people are when I skewer some anti-male post someone proudly put on facebook. They're really at a loss for what to say, which makes it even easier to win the argument.

I do agree Milo Yiannopoulos' persona is a little "me me me" and sometimes frivolous, but he fills a niche. Feminists are joy-killers, so it's effective to have a spokeperson that looks like he's always having fun and who points out with his demeanor that feminists can be looked at with hilarity. What would be great would be if a gay man already established as a celebrity or leader in some field started advocating for men's rights in a serious manner. Someone like that has a lot to lose, though. Milo built up his position by being controversial so he's immune to attacks.

Sure but it's a pretty good guess. If I had to put money on whether someone votes Dem or Rep, being gay is a pretty darn good indicator. The correlation might even be higher for gay people who constantly talk about being gay. The same goes for black voters. I think Republican presidential candidates would be overjoyed if they could get 15% of the black vote?

Sure but it's a pretty good guess.

We all work off of assumptions, it’s why stereotypes are largely harmless so long as people are flexible with them.

But I know what this guy means, it’s when people insist that because you’re gay you have to vote for Hillary, or because you’re black you have to agree with BlackLivesMatter and all that crap.

That’s when it gets sinister and that’s when - ironically when you think about it - the true colours of the social justice crowd really show themselves. Everything but everything has to fit their theory, not the other way around.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Most stereotypes have a basis in reality either from the present or the past. One problem is that, especially in the age of identity politics, people are placing groups ahead of individuals. They seem to more and more believe that a person can be arbitrarily categorized and that those categories represent what is most important about human existence. It's a tragedy really: the loss of individuals, the idea that people are nothing more than items in a group rather than the idea that a group is nothing more than many individuals set together.

people are placing groups ahead of individuals

That’s part of it for sure … and they’re certainly deductive and not inductive so they lead off from theory and intellectual frameworks and filter out any ‘messy’ outliers such as black Republicans or what have you.

[–]xNOM 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well I guess it depends on if they're insulted, or just surprised. Stereotype are like statistics. They're only harmful when used by stupid people.

He's like the last of a dying breed and had to wait until his career was well into retirement before he could say anything.

When I was young considered a career in the humanities or social sciences. So glad I didn't now.

Gay men have been reminded once again that they are not allowed to question feminism.

It should be impossible to put it any more accurately.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you read what he wrote it's really not unreasonable at all. Lots of fainting couch types really getting worked up.

I'm not a great fan of his tone and statements before he gets to the table in the middle, way too many echoes (and overt reference to) The Red Pill in there. But there is so much that he says which is good and reasonable. Berating him entirely while ignoring statements like these is obvious cherry picking:

“Women” or "men" is not a meaningful category, since all women or men are not alike. “Gay” is not a meaningful category since all gay people are not alike.

or

As I have shown at every stage, being a strong man does not require that you demean women: indeed, no strong man demeans women or other men.

I think overall my criticism is that he carefully breaks down that you can't essentialize people or groups, and he avoids doing this by saying things like 'many men' or 'some women,' but he entirely dismisses feminism in one broad brush stroke. It's not popular here, but I believe there are good parts of feminism and hate to see the entire theory, which is broad and diverse after many decades, painted all in one color.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism has become nothing more than the belief in women's oppression. I don't think there's any saving it now.

[–]callsyourcatugly 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So his blog post in question consists mainly of the advice to "be informed, rely on facts and don't use judgement statements. Be confident in the facts you use to inform your opinion and don't respond to personal attacks."

Sooooooo much misogyny there. I can definitely see how this guy would have spent his entire career deliberately holding back women.

You thought the management changed? They still have the same goals. The last CEO was just a scapegoat. The press releases they had a while back changed nothing.

There wasn't a huge uproar about lesbians touching penises. Just shows the mentality of hypocrisy.
