Depends on how much you care about your grade in that class.

If you do go up against your professor, do your research, present him with the facts, and make sure you have backup copies of all your research and all your homework.

Be prepared to have to go to the dean to fight for the grade you deserve, because this asshole prof may very well grade you poorly for going against the groupthink.

Most professors will not downgrade you for having a difference of opinion, provided you back it up. And even he did, I still believe you should stand up and do what's right.

When I studied film in university we were shown a radfem documentary from the early 80's called "Not a Love Story." Its thesis is that pornography turns men into rapists (I'm not exaggerating), and that violent porn derives from male rage against feminism. I wrote a blistering critique of the film using solid sources and was given an A.

Edit: so I'm being downvoted for recommending doing the right thing. WTF?

He will likely not change his mind when presented with evidence. His mind is built on a foundation of misinformation. Simply poking at one corner will not bring the structure down.

So with that in mind, perhaps you could present your counter sources in such a way as to not become adversarial with him about it.

I would point out the CDC study that demonstrates that "forced penetration" and "forced to penetrate" are basically equal. Then I would see if you can get him to rationalize this. It requires some mental gymnastics. Who knows, maybe the cognitive dissonance it creates will be a seed of enlightenment.

There was a post yesterday from a guy who made a presentation about the MRM in class. It was a great post; it went better than he expected, but it really gave us all some hope for the future if you "young fellas" are actually starting to speak up about it.

Why did he feel the need to say that? No reason to say a certain crime 'doesn't happen' to one gender just because the majority of victims are of the other gender. It's like he wanted to preempt any attempts to even remark that it happens to men too.

Id raise it with him 1 on 1. Be very polite. Ask him why he believes that. State your opinion. Politely enquire if you can present him with some contrary information and get his feedback. If hes amenable, fish out some studies, which are easy to find. Maybe mention the gender bias of the term rape, all studies which conclude women make up 90+% of victims I find, define rape as penetration. There was a great Reddit thread where male victims shared their horrid experiences, which Id consider including too.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes a pattern or it becomes a serious topic of discussion. Poking people over an offhand comment like that doesn't usually end well, especially if you jump straight into the political language and accusations. People say dumb things or misspeak sometimes.

Most professors respect and admire students who can call them out on something with strong evidence supporting your claim. With it being sociology, the class infrastructure is based on opinions. You literally make a question and study society to prove or disprove. I.e.

Does being poor make you more violent? Society shows us that crime rates are higher in lower class communities so you could say yes.

I took a couple of sociology classes and usually the exams or grades are composed of assignments and questions that rely on your opinions (or specific theories mentioned in class) and evidence supporting them. So when it comes to your grades, your professor may remember your name and perhaps will either grade harder or lighter depending on if he respects you for calling him out. So I say do it.

I wouldn't get too accusatory at first. People aren't perfect and make mistakes. Who knows - maybe he actually agrees with you and felt compelled to say what he did due to political correctness?

There's a good chance that you can talk with him a positive way and mention that he's probably forgetting about male-on-male victims (in society and in prison) and he may not be aware of several studies that show a lot of female-on-male assaults.

With regards to walking alone at night, men are much more likely to be the victim of some form of assault (physical or sexual) than women.

If he is open to your views, that's probably the end of it and it won't hurt your mark.

If he gets angry and flatly says you are wrong, then you probably have a choice to make: let it go and it won't affect your mark, or prove him wrong and maybe suffer a mark penalty. The third option is to let it go until you get your mark and then bring it up with the administration.

women feel endangered when walking home at night

Those kinds of attacks are pretty rare. Most sexual assault happens in a more familiar setting with someone the victim knows.

Men have much more reason to feel endangered when walking home at night, statistically.

My sociology teacher said the same exact thing, word for word. That is an undeniably scary thought that this kind of outlook is being forced on students, many of whom are unaware.
